Tegrity Recordings Completed

Tegrity screenshotsWayne Wesolowski, along with students Matt Moy, Andrea Ebert-McNeill and Samee Haq, completed five Tegrity recordings on General Chemistry Laboratory techniques. The project plan is to require that students view these recordings, and then pass a corresponding quiz, in order to be admitted to the lab. The expectation is that students will be better prepared to successfully complete the lab, and will be more aware of safety concerns, after viewing the recordings. The recordings are available for viewing in the General Chemistry Lab folder in our Tegrity site. (If you've not used Tegrity before, follow the First Time User link to check your browser for compatibility with Tegrity.)

Although Wayne has taken a position at the University of Arizona, his hope and ours is that we collaborate on the continuation of this project.

Copyright Speaker

On August 29 Kenneth Crews came to campus to analyze issues involving copyright. Crews is a professor at the Indiana School of Law, directs IUPUI's Copyright Management Center, and has published two books on the subject of copyright and fair use in academic settings. His familiarity with both the 1998 Digital Millenium Copyright Act and the 2002 TEACH Act qualifies him as an important resource for anyone interested in understanding the latest legal decisions affecting our profession.

Crews' visit included a general presentation in the morning, and sessions to address more specific issues in the afternoon. Topics for the three afternoon sessions included printroom and library issues, information technology staff issues and concerns affecting faculty.

Prof. Crews offers the following web sites, which discuss recent developments in the areas of copyright and fair use.

ESRI’s 2003 Users Conference

Jon Lewis attended ESRI’s 2003 Users Conference from July 6 - 9, 2003 in San Diego, California. ESRI produces powerful geography information systems (GIS) software. Still under development, ESRI’s newest GIS software product, ArcGlobe, was demonstrated. Once released, that product should make it possible to create 3D flyover maps of regions that can be stored in video format. This will allow modules to be created for use in conjunction with courses having geography related objectives. For example, a flyover map of the Nile Valley might be used in conjunction with the HUMN220 Mediterranean World course.

Technology Funded

Title III funds were used to improve the technology capabilities of Scholl 101, one of the largest lecture halls on campus. That room will have two different video projection monitors, permitting instructors to combine videotape and computer presentations on adjoining screens. Grant funds were also used to order an additional ADA station for the Academic Resource Center.
