Technology Training Room

One of the new "added attractions" in Kindlon Hall is a Technology Training Room (KN 145). This room is equipped with 14 new PCs running Windows 2000, as well as a scanner, two Scantron OCR scoring devices, a color inkjet printer and a PC set up for digital video capture and editing. The room includes a data projector for presentations and training use. We want to maximize the usage of this excellent facility while at the same time keeping the priorities for its use in line with university-wide goals and needs.

KH 145 may be scheduled for:

  • Formal technology training sessions offered via Rich Belval or other trainers [includes new employee orientation and any other scheduled sessions]
  • Academic Technology Training - i.e. Title III related training sessions offered by Eileen Clark or others
  • PeopleSoft Training Sessions offered by David Sonnenberger, Rich Belval, or any other department that wants to train one or more staff members
  • technology-related work sessions/meetings
  • individuals working on technology-related projects that are part of a major university initiative (Title III-faculty development work; PeopleSoft development work)

KH 145 may be used on an unscheduled basis:
INDIVIDUALS may work in the room on an ad hoc basis- i.e. a faculty member doing some scanning, etc. Such "drop in Faculty" may continue working as long as the equipment is not needed for a scheduled training session or unless some confidential matters are under discussion during a scheduled meeting/training session. In such a case, the faculty should leave and return after the scheduled session.

ALL SCHEDULING of KH 145 is VIA the HELPDESK. Reserve times by email to HELPDESK. HELPDESK will confirm the request. Faculty may gain access by getting a key from the Helpdesk (KN 167A), the Office of the Dean of Arts & Sciences, or any of our technology trainers (Rich Belval, Eileen Clark).

Student Direct Access Moves Forward

The big news on the access side is BenU Live! - the real time information resource on course availability and location for faculty and students along with class schedule access for students. Faculty have commented on how this helps them in advising undergraduate students in the week prior to the start of the term and during drop/add week. Students find that it saves them the time of standing in line at Ben Central if they need schedule information. You can access BenU Live! from the quickjump menu on the BU website.

Technology in the Classroom

Electronically Equipped Classrooms (EEC's), Computer Classrooms, and Computers On Wheels (COW's) have been relocated into Kindlon, Birck, Krasa and Benedictine Halls. As in past terms classes have been scheduled into these rooms, and COW's can be reserved through the HELPDESK.

There is also one new opportunity for scheduling technology. Birck 236 is a Computer Classroom for AD HOC USE. This room holds 20 student PCs but NO permanently installed projection system. This room will be dedicated to solving the problem of "I only need to use a computer classroom for 1 week of the term" or "I just need to use a computer classroom for 2 class periods to show my students how to...". Classes will NOT be scheduled for the entire term in this room - only occasional use (think of it a as field trip...). You may reserve this room by e-mailing Janet Hulsey (or Chris Damon if Janet is not available). If you want to use this room and need a projection system, reserve one via the HELPDESK.

Literature and Rhetoric Courses on the Web

Larnell Dunkley has developed WebCT enhancements for two literature courses LITR 255 - American Literature I, LITR 291/391 - African American Autobiography, and RHET 101 - Argumentative Writing. To view information pages for these courses, and for login instructions, go to http://owl.ben.edu:9000 and click on the See courses on this server link. Scroll down and click on the Literature (LITR) or Rhetoric (RHET) category. On the page that loads, click onto view the information and login instructions for each course. You'll also find an information page for Julie Dugger's LITR 360 - Modern Poetry course.

School of Education Web Site

The School of Education web site has a new look! SOE faculty and Title III student worker Radhika Shah have been working to develop the content of the site. Visit the site for information on faculty, programs, scholarships, and professional development. "What's New?" and "Employment Opportunities" pages will be coming soon.

Teaching and Learning with Technology Summer Institute

In July of this past summer, Jon Lewis attended Syllabus Magazine's annual "Teaching and Learning with Technology Summer Institute", held in Santa Clara, CA. Jon enrolled in a full day workshop led by two members of the TLT Group (Teaching, Learning, and Technology). Participants learned about the Flashlight Current Student Inventory Kit and other TLT products and services designed to determine whether technology is being used effectively in advancing student learning. One of the two TLT presenters is listed in the grant as possible guest speaker, and we are trying to bring him to campus this fall.

Jon also participated in a half-day workshop entitled, "Developing Effective Faculty Development Institutes", run by two faculty from Southeast Missouri State University. This meeting brought together a much larger group of people who listened to Southeast Missouri State's method of organizing summer and inter-semester technology institutes and then described how their own campuses handled faculty training. One recommendation reiterated by several individuals was the value of devoting a relatively small amount of time to training faculty in the use of one software program rather than longer periods covering several programs.

In addition to these two workshops, Jon attended other conference sessions and toured the vendor displays. We are acquiring several items from those vendors, including Quicktionary's language translation pen, Handiscope's hand held microscope, and materials for assisting in the development of 360 degree panoramic photos and virtual object manipulation.

Upcoming Events

September, 2001 faculty/staff training has been scheduled. Details can be found at http://www.ben.edu/ithome/training.asp. An Open House showcasing our newest technologies is planned for November, exact date still to be determined. We're also hoping to arrange for Stephen Ehrmann of the TLT Group to come to campus to discuss organizing syllabi to help make technology work in our courses.
