History
Benedictine University was founded in 1887 in Chicago as St. Procopius College
and relocated to Lisle in 1901. We were renamed Illinois Benedictine College
in 1971. In response to community needs, we added graduate, doctorate and adult
learner programs. We became Benedictine University in 1996. Today, the University
remains committed to providing a high-quality, catholic, liberal arts education
for men and women.
Benedictine University ranks 37th among more than 140 schools classified as “Best Universities – Master’s” in the Midwest, according to the 2008 figures recently released by U.S. News & World Report. For 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked Benedictine University as a Top School in the Midwest (and sixth in Illinois) for Master’s Universities, 13th in the Midwest (and sixth in Illinois) for Ethnic Diversity, as a Top Campus with the Most International Students (fifth in Illinois) and for Highest Proportion of Classes Under 20 Students (seventh in Illinois).

Location
Benedictine University is 25 miles west of Chicago, in suburban Lisle
near Naperville, and is easily accessible from the city and suburbs via
the interstate highway system. Metra's Burlington Northern train stops
in Lisle and O'Hare International Airport is only a 30-minute drive
away. In addition to the many social and cultural offerings of the
Chicago metropolitan area, the University enjoys the proximity and use
of Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory,
the Morton Arboretum, a ski hill, riding stable and several golf
courses. The University's location in the high-tech East-West Tollway
corridor gives students opportunities for internships and employment.

Academic Facilities
The Kindlon Hall of Learning and the Birck Hall of Science bring
science and technology to new levels. They house state of the art
computer labs, specialized science labs, a research center and the
Jurica Nature Museum.
The Library houses 147,000 processed volumes.
The library is a member of LIBRAS, a cooperative organization of 17 college
libraries in the Chicago area that makes available more than two million volumes
and 4,500 periodical titles. Through the I-Share catalog (CARLI; Consortium
of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois), the Library has access to approximately
25 million items from other Illinois libraries.
Benedictine University has distance education classrooms that provide
students with the capability to interact, globally, with other colleges
and universities in a classroom setting.
Costs
The cost of undergraduate tuition for the 2007-08 is $10,400 per
semester. The average cost of room and board is $6,953. Mandatory fees include
an $80 health fee, a $300 technology fee and a $130 student activity fee. Adult
program tuition for 2007-08 is $450 per credit hour. Graduate tuition for 2007-08
is $695 per semester hour and $475 per quarter hour.

Accreditation
Benedictine University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Illinois State Board
of Education Teacher Certification Section, the National League for Nursing
and the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American
Dietetic Association.

Academically gifted students are further challenged with special
sections of core classes and the opportunity for independent study.

Technology
Benedictine integrates computer technology and World Wide Web access
in courses ranging from accounting to biochemistry. We have 10
electronically enhanced classrooms. All students have e-mail addresses
and ready access to the Internet from their residence hall rooms and
computer stations throughout campus. There are more than 180 personal
computer stations across campus. Equipment in our state-of-the-art
science labs is generally available for undergraduate use.

Benedictine University provides a safe environment for learning and
socializing. Secure residence halls, adjacent parking lots, lighted
paths and emergency call boxes complement the efforts of our 24-hour
police officers.

Benedictine competes in the NCAA Division III in the following men's
sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer,
swimming and diving, and track. Benedictine competes in the NCAA
Division III in the following women's sports: basketball, cheerleading,
cross country, dance, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving,
tennis, track and volleyball.
