Many Leaves from a Single Branch

When many students first arrive at college, they are surprised at the breadth
of general education classes they must take in order to graduate. They wonder
why someone who wants to become an accountant or biologist should study
subjects that have nothing directly to do with those fields. Why study history
or literature when you plan to become a bioengineer? Why study logic when
you want to teach elementary school?
Benedictine University adheres to the belief that a broad-based education provides
a concrete foundation for a lifetime of change and is the best preparation for
life-long
learning. Therefore, any liberal arts curriculum must be highly interdisciplinary
so that faculty and students see the connections among all branches of knowledge.
College of Arts and Sciences
Advancing the liberal arts experience of students is a fundamental component
of a Benedictine University education. The College of Arts and Sciences provides
this to undergraduates through its major and minor programs, interdisciplinary
offerings and support for the core curriculum.
College of Business, Technology and Professional Programs
One of Benedictine Universitys strengths is its integration of the liberal
arts
with professional learning. The College of Business, Technology and Professional
Programs offers undergraduate degree programs in accounting, business, computer
science and communication arts.
School of Education
Quality teacher education places great emphasis on a strong liberal arts foundation.
The interactive relationship among liberal arts, professional education and
communication skills uniquely prepares Benedictine University students for
a career in teaching.
Ultimately, a Benedictine University education prepares students to communicate
effectively; to reason and make informed judgments; to identify and solve problems;
to develop a sense of intellectual curiosity; to understand the relationships
between
specific areas of study; to pursue and communicate the truth; and to confront
and
resolve ethical issues.
