Keith
Bunkenburg
Head Coach
(630) 829-6146
kbunkenburg@ben.edu
Keith Bunkenburg took over the reins of the Benedictine mens basketball
program in 1995, having been at the helm for the most successful decade in school
history. Also a former standout player for the Eagles, he has guided the program
to a school-record nine consecutive winning seasons, three 20-win campaigns,
four Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) regular-season titles, an NIIC
tournament crown, and four NCAA Division III tournament appearances.
Bunkenburg has averaged more than 17 wins per season as Benedictines head
coach and has guided the Eagles to either the NIIC regular-season or tournament
title in five of the last nine seasons. The NIIC Coach of the Year
for both the 1999-00 and 2000-01 campaigns, Bunkenburg was named Illinois
NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in both 2000 and 2004. His .651
win percentage ranks him among the winningest active NCAA Division III coaches.
Benedictine has won numerous NIIC team defense titles in Bunkenburgs tenure,
as his philosophy stresses that end of the floor first. That defense leads the
Eagles into an up-tempo style of play that is fun for fans to watch and easy
for players to buy in to. Within two years of taking over as the Eagles
head coach, Bunkenburg had his team in the NCAA tournament after it won the
NIIC regular-season title for the 1996-97 campaign. He guided the Eagles to
three-straight league regular-season crowns in 1998-99, 1999-00 and 2000-01;
the last two of those ended in NCAA tournament appearances as well. The 2003-04
squad won the programs first NIIC tournament crown to earn another NCAA
tourney appearance.
Bunkenburg replaced legendary coach Tony LaScala, a Benedictine Athletic Department
Hall of Famer for whom he played from 1984-88, and served for five years as
an assistant coach (1990-95). Recognizing that being part of a winning tradition
as a player legitimizes his efforts as a coach, Bunkenburg can fall back upon
his teams combined 68-34 record and four NIIC regular-season titles during
his playing career. A three-time all-conference honoree and four-year starter,
Bunkenburg ranks ninth on the schools career scoring list (1,432) and
second on its all-time assists chart (497). He was a major contributer on the
1987-88 team that won 21 games, second-most in school history.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Bunkenburg attended St. Patrick High School where
he was an all-conference baseball and basketball player, as well as each teams
MVP. He continued that two-sport success in college, as he started for two seasons
as a catcher for the Eagle baseball team. As a junior, he was tabbed as both
the baseball and basketball team MVPs, making him one of few athletes in school
history to receive that honor from two teams in the same year. He also played
golf for the school all four years.
A 1989 graduate of then-Illinois Benedictine College (now Benedictine University),
Bunkenburg earned his degree in physical education. He has also served as the
head mens and womens tennis coach and the head mens and womens
golf coach during his tenure at Benedictine.
He resides in Naperville.

has more than 15 years of experience on the bench as either a head coach or
assistant coach at the college level, and has already helped the Eagles to three
winning seasons and an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. He will serve
as one of the teams two junior varsity coaches in addition to his other
duties as the Eagles' men's and women's golf coach..
Janczak began his coaching career at North Central College. During his 12-year
tenure at his alma mater, Janczak helped the Cardinals to four College Conference
of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) titles. A coach under Bob Bray (a 1979 graduate

of duties during his tenure at North Central, including scouting, film breakdown
and recruiting.
A 1984 graduate of North Central, Janczak also served as the head mens
basketball coach at fellow Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) school Dominican
University for two years (2000-02). He is a financial analyst and resides in
