Wisconsin schools claimed the men's and women's team titles
as UW-Oshkosh won the women's title and UW-LaCrosse recaptured
the men's crown at the NCAA Division III Track and Field
Championships hosted by Benedictine University.
For UW-Lacrosse, it was the fifth team title in the past
six year, and record 10th crown overall, by garnering 74
½ points. Lincoln University - which has seven championships
to its credit - placed second in the team standings with
54 points. UW-Whitewater was third (46 points), while Williams
College and McMurry mtied for fourth with 34 points apiece.
The women's title by UW-Oshkosh was also a record seventh
crown for the Titans (Christopher Newport also had six championships,
previously). UWO last won the team title in 2004
The United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches
Association (USTFCCA) named Uzomo Orji of MIT as the Men's
Field Athlete of the Meet. Orji won the shot put and was
second in the hammer. Macharia Yout of Widener was named
the Men's Runner of the Meet. Yout won three distance events,
the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the 5,000 meters, and the
10,000 meters.
On the women's side UW-Oshkosh's Robyn Jarocki was named
the Field Athlete of the meet. Jarocki won the discus and
set an NCAA record in winning the shot put. She also placed
second in the hammer. Lincoln's Shanda Jackson was the Runner
of the Meet, setting an NCAA record in winning the 100 meters,
and taking third in the 200 meters. Jackson was also a member
of the 4x100 relay team that took second.
Women's Javelin
Gustavus freshman Lisa Brown shocked the field of 18 entrants
by winning the women's javelin. Brown was the first freshman
to win an event at the 2006 championships. Her throw of
154'6" was the best mark in Division III this season
and topped second place Dee Dee Arnall of Pacific (Oregon).
Arnall tossed the javelin 153'2". Brittni Stewart (Colby-Sawyer)
was third with a mark of 149'4" followed by Central's
Alicia Whisner (148'3"). Whisner's teammate Alex Costigan
took fifth (146'6"). The other All-Americans in the
event were Sophia Dentzel (Willamette - 143'0"), Sarah
Mitchell (Muhlenberg 142'2"), and another freshman,
Wheaton's (Illinois) Brandi McNeil who claimed eighth with
a toss of 142'1".
Women's Triple Jump
Alecia Watson of the City College of New York claimed the
championship in the women's triple jump. Watson's mark of
40'11" was nearly six inches better than second place
Angie Hawk of Millikin (40'5 ½"). New Jersey
City University's Andrea Herbert was third (39'6")
while Sarah Thayer of UW-LaCrosse came in fourth (38'8 ¾").
The other All-Americans were Caroline Doctor of Williams
(38'8 ¼"), Susan Brown of Macalester (38'6 ¾"),
Jena Robinson of Puget Sound (38'2"), and Emily Pfeufer
of Allegheny (37'11 ¼").
Women's Shot Put
Robyn Jarocki of UW-Oshkosh successfully defended her title
in the women's shot put and set an NCAA record in the process.
Jarocki's mark of 55'0 ¼" bested a meet record
set in 2003. Jarocki captured her second title of the meet.
She also won the discus. Keelin Godsey of Bates took second
with a throw of 46'10 ¼" followed by Joni Claypool
of Linfield (46'3 ½"). Rachel Clark was the
highest finishing underclassmen. The freshman from Christopher
Newport claimed fourth with a mark of 45'10". Also
earning All-America honors in the event were Loras' Dana
Klemm (45'3 ½"), Danielle Rankin of UW-Oshkosh
(45'1"), Calvin's Megann Vandervliet (45'1"),
and Amanda Weinmann of St. Mary's (44'9").
Women's 1,500 Meter Run
North Central's Amber Druien won the first of two events
where she held the top time entering Saturday's finals.
Druien took the 1,500 meters in a stadium record 4:28.03
to claim the title. Catherine Beck of Tufts was second (4:29.08)
followed by SUNY-Oneonta's Kaitlin O'Sullivan (4:32.85).
Concordia-Moorhead senior Natalie Hanson was fourth in 4:33.15.
Breanna Lucy of Keene State (4:34.14), Marcia Taddy of UW-Platteville
(4:34.57), Heather Worden of California Lutheran (4:34.96),
and Kristen Painter of UW-LaCrosse (4:35.41) also earned
All-America honors.
Women's 400 Meter Relay
The City College of New York set an NCAA Championships record
in the 4x100 meter relay, successfully defending their title
by winning the event in 45.98. Mechelle Barnwell, Alecia
Watson, Sharnalee Stewart, and Jodyann Raymond were the
members of the team. Lincoln University, the top qualifier
for the finals, placed second in 46.42. SUNY-Oneonta was
third (47.05) immediately followed by The College of New
Jersey (47.32). UW-LaCrosse claimed fourth (47.58), Texas
Lutheran was sixth (47.60), Wartburg placed seventh (47.63),
and Calvin was eight (47.95).
Men's 400 Meter Relay
Mount Union College captured the NCAA title in the men's
4x100 meter relay. The team of Nic Saluppo, Pierre Garcon,
James Cunningham, and John Biacofsky took home the title
in 40.30. McMurry University was second (40.57) while New
Jersey City placed third (40.77). Greenville brought home
fourth (41.07) and Lincoln was fifth (41.08). the other
All-American relay teams were defending champion Nebraska
Wesleyan (41.18), Central (41.28), and UW-Whitewater (41.33).
Men's 1,500 Meter Run
Willamette's Nick Symmonds captured his second straight
1,500 meter title by winning the event in 3:49.24 Saturday
afternoon. Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer was a close second
(3:49.70) followed by Mike Davitian of Williams (3:50.95).
SUNY-Plattsburgh's Matt Deshane came home in fourth (3:50.95)
while Ryan Terlouw of Hope placed fifth (3:51.72). Nebraska
Wesleyan's Aaron Dye (3:52.41), Mike Flint of the Coast
Guard Academy (3:54.10), and Sam Dalke (3:55) of Haverford
were the other All-Americans.
Men's 110 Meter Hurdles
UW-LaCrosse's Marcus Walgrave, fastest preliminary qualifier,
backed up his effort by winning the 110 meter hurdles in
13.98. John Fudge of Lincoln was second (14.07), Paul Klemic
of Richard Stockton placed third (14.18), and Jonathan Garcia
of UMass-Dartmouth took fourth (14.20). The other All-Americans
were Dorran Coley of Thiel (14.32), David Skiba of Washington
University (14.33), Rashawn White of Anderson (14.35, and
Tanner Miest of Gustavus (14.59).
Women's 100 Meter Hurdles
Sheana Grigsby of Carthage claimed the 100 meter hurdles
crown at the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon. Grigsby
ran 14.06 to best eight others. Sumer Rohrs of Frostburg
State placed second with a 14.22 clip while Emily Lepley
was third in 14.25. Liz Faller of UW-Eau Claire came home
fourth in 14.29. The other All-Americans in the event were
Shannon Turczyn of Monmouth (14.33), Denay Caldwell of New
Jersey City (14.47), Aislin Sowash of Haverford (14.52),
and Andria Gentile of SUNY-Cortalnd (14.67).
Women's 400 Meters
Illinois Wesleyan's Rachel Anderson ran a time of 54.98
to win the 400 meter hurdles Saturday afternoon. Nadine
Pieske of UW-Oshkosh was the runner-up (55.62) followed
by Angie Pfeiffer of Concordia-Moorhead (55.78). Lisa Winkle
of Calvin came home fourth (55.87). Other finishers in the
400 meters were The College of New Jersey's Jessica Bonelli
(55.91), Ashlee Robertson of SUNY-Oneonta (55.96), Brittany
Boyd, also of The College of New Jersey (56.24), and Liz
Kooistra of UW-Eau Claire (56.30).
Women's 100 Meters
Lincoln sophomore Shandra Jackson captured the title in
the women's 100 meters on Saturday. Jackson's time of 11.66
outdistanced Musu Jackson-Buckner of SUNY-Oneonta (11.85).
Alecia Watson from the City College of New York came home
third (11.87) followed by Tonnisha Bell of Augsburg (11.96).
The City College of New York also placed Mechelle Barnwell
(11.98). Jena Durnin of UW-LaCrosse was a close sixth (11.99).
Jane Ukandu of Emory came home seventh (12.15), and freshman
Ebony Barnes of New Jersey City University was the final
All-American (12.19).
Men's Shot Put
Uzoma Orji of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
used his second to last throw to win the shot put with a
toss of 60'2 ½". Nate Meckes of Calvin was the
runner-up with a mark of 57'9 ½". Brandon Houle
of UW-Oshkosh finished third (57'7") followed by Dwayne
Lockridge of Anderson (57'3"). Peter Cathcart (St.
Olaf - 55'8 ¼"), Dan Austin (Williams - 54'6
¾"), Justin Archer (Mt. Union - 54'2 ½"),
and Robert Godfrey (Rowan - 53'8 ¼") rounded
out the top eight.
Men's Javelin
Corey White of the University of Redlands dominated the
field in the men's javelin, throwing 231'7". David
Bergeron of Westfield State was second with a mark of 208'.
Joel Krebs of George Fox placed third (207'6") followed
by Middlebury's Kristoph Becker (202'9"). Stephen Burns
of Rochester Institute of Technology (201'1"), Tom
Crowley of the Coast Guard Academy (201'0"), Vince
Werner of Allegheny (198'0"), and Bronson Stelzer of
UW-LaCrosse (195'4") rounded out the All-Americans.
Men's Triple Jump
Fred Jones of Tufts University captured the men's triple
jump with a leap of 49'7". Nathan Adkins of Redlands
was the runner-up (49'1"). Monmouth's Albert Greene
finished third (48'10 ¼") followed by Brandon
Mirach of Williams (48'6 ¼"). The other men's
triple jump All-Americans were Broderick Maybank from McDaniel
(48'3 ¼"), Dan Marcy from Tufts (47'9 ¾"),
Alex Stuart of Monmouth (47'9"), and Tynez Wilson from
SUNY-Cortland (47'8 ½").
Men's 400 Meter Dash
Bobby Young of Lincoln successfully defended his title in
the 400 meter dash by running 46.11. Nate Olson of UW-LaCrosse
was the runner-up (46.72). Lance Wigfall of Lincoln placed
third (46.92) followed by UW-LaCrosse's Jeremy Deterville
(47.53). Louis Corominas (DeSales - 47.63), Tony Marcinek
(UW-LaCrosse - 47.68), Adam Pennington (North Central -
47.71), and Ryan Martin (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps - 47.91)
rounded out the All-Americans.
Men's 100 Meter Dash
Greg Nixon of Howard Payne captured the 100 meter dash championship
in a photo finish. Nixon and runner-up Marcus Walgrave of
UW-LaCrosse actually posted the same time (10.43). Ronald
Hussey of New Jersey City was third (10.49) followed by
Muskingum's Dean Thornton who was fourth (10.56). A pair
of McMurry teammates occupied slots five and six as the
two freshmen, Haneus Ollison (10.63) and Bert Green (10.64)
were separated by .01. Nic Saluppo finished seventh (10.64)
followed by Kemar Brown of Rensselaer (10.76).
Men's 800 Meters
Nick Symmonds of Willamette won his second event of the
day by winning the 800 meters in 1:49.59. Jeff Zodda of
The College of New Jersey was the runner-up (1:49.91). Nick
Stenuf of Nazareth (1:51.31) took third, followed by Tyson
Everson of Elizabethtown (1:51.52). UW-Whitewater's Eric
Keen was fifth (1:52.25), UW-Superior's Matt Kramer sixth
(1:52.30), Wabash's Geoff Lambert seventh (1:52.76), and
Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer (1:52.82) took eighth.
Men's 400 Meter Hurdles
Lincoln's Jeff Jasmin won the 400 meter hurdles in 51.25.
Middlebury's Kevin Bright placed second in 51.95 while PJ
Theisen of St. Thomas came home third (52.25). All of the
top three were faster than the previous Division III best.
Augustana's Ted McMillan was one of two freshmen to place.
McMillan was fourth (52.48) followed by UW-LaCrosse's Brad
Peterson (52.50). Cory Beebe, a freshman from Heidelburg,
was sixth (52.78), while Derek Johnson of St. John's was
seventh (53.03), and UW-LaCrosse's Nolan Hietpas was eighth
(53.07).
Men's 200 Meter Dash
Howard Payne's Greg Nixon won his second event of Saturday
afternoon when he captured the 100 meter dash in 21.05.
McMurry freshman Hanneus Ollison was second in 21.32 followed
closely by Loncoln's Bobby Young (21.33). Nate Olson was
one of two UW-LaCrosse All-Americans, claiming fourth in
21.36. McMurry's Bert Green (21.47), Williams' Andrew Arons
(21.59), Michael Queensland of UW-LaCrosse (21.61), and
John Mikalik, also of McMurry (21.89) were the remainder
of the All-Americans.
Men's 5,000 Meter Run
Widener's Macharia Yout won his third event of the meet
by claiming the crown in the 5,000 meters. Yout's time of
14:48.96 bested second place Julian Boggs of Colorado College
(14:51.26). UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl came in third (14:56.64)
and North Central's Nick Hird (14:56.93) was fourth. Neal
Holtschulte of Williams (14:57.39), Greg Reindl of Washington
(14:57.86), Brian Donovan of The College of New Jersey (14:58.31),
and Crosby Freeman of Pomona-Pitzer was eighth (15:00.09).
Men's 4x400 Meter Relay
Lincoln University's relay team of Bobby Young, Jeff Jasmin,
Randy Dawkins, and Lance Wigfall won the men's 4x400 in
a time of 3:08.55. UW-LaCrosse was second (3:10.11) followed
by McMurry (3:12.63). UW-Stevens Point came home fourth
(3:13.01) while Nebraska Wesleyan was fifth (3:13.36). Central
finished sixth (3:13.47) while North Central was seventh
(3:13.88) and Wartburg finished eighth (3:14.08).
Women's 800 Meter Run
North Central's Amber Druien captured her second title of
the day by winning the women's 800 meters in 2:12.54. Kaitlin
O'Sullivan of SUNY-Oneonta finished second (2:12.99) while
Camille Medema of Calvin came in third (2:13.44). Wartburg's
Heidi Porter finished fourth (2:13.77). Ashley Cronin of
Gustavus (2:13.84), Natalie Hanson of Concordai-Moorhead
(2:13.84), Stephanie Herrick of The College of New Jersey
(2:13.95), and Jenna Mitchler of UW-Stevens Point (2:14.15)
rounded out the All-Americans.
Women's 400 Meter Hurdles
Sheana Grigsby continued the theme of winning multiple events
on Saturday. Grigsby ran 60.30 to top RPI's Jen Dias (60.90).
Women's 200 Meter Dash
Musu Jackson-Buckner of SUNY-Oneonta took the title in the
200 meters, winning in 23.75. Alecia Watson of the City
College of New York was second in 23.80.
Women's 5,000 Meter Run
Caroline Cretti of Williams won the 5,000 meters in 17:12.32.
Breanna Lucey of Keene State was the runner-up in 17:17.17.
Women's 4x400 Meter Relay
Lincoln University won the women's 4x400 meter relay. The
team of Shari Richardson, Yolona Sabb, Jamanah Freeman,
and Jordean Matthews won in 3:45.05, besting second place
Williamette (3:47.85).
