Women's Pole Vault
Wilmington College junior Ashley Johnson captured the women's
pole vault title with a vault of 12'6 ¼", a
stadium record. Her vault was a season best, topping her
qualifying mark of 12'4 ½". Johnson tied with
Augustana (Illinois) junior Meghan Voiland, but earned the
title based on fewer failed attempts. Calvin's Missy Smith
placed third with a 12'2 ½" vault, the same
mark as defending outdoor national champion Stephanie Barnes
of UW-Eau Claire who placed fourth in the junior's attempt
at a repeat. Hope College's Jen Vandermeer was sixth, also
with a mark of 12'2 ½". Two individuals tied
for seventh place as Whitney Calvert of Loras and Megan
Rossi of North Central each cleared 11'10 ½"
and had the same amount of misses. Rossi had the top height
cleared entering the meet. The top six finishers in the
event all bested or equaled Barnes' winning height from
2005.
Women's Discus
UW-Oshkosh's Robyn Jarocki bested a field of 19 student-athletes
to claim the women's discus title. Jarocki, a senior, successfully
defended her 2005 title in the event by throwing a stadium
record 158'2". Lauren Lucci of Widener University placed
second (152'8") followed by Ellen Thys of Loras College
(146'9"). Keelin Godsey of Bates College placed fourth
(144'7") and UW-Eau Claire's Paula Crossfield claimed
fifth (143'6"). The other individuals earning All-America
honors in the discus were Audra Schappell of Richard Stockton
New Jersey (140'4"), Jess Jewell of Luther (138'),
and Christina Niehaus of Greenville College (137'7").
Heptathlon Day One Recap
After four events of the women's heptathlon, Hope College's
Lindsay Lange paces the field of 19 competitors. With 3,063
point, Lange, a sophomore, has a 57 point advantage on second
place Christine Hendricks, from fellow Michigan Conference
school Calvin. Lange won the 100 meter hurdles and 200 meter
dash while Hendricks claimed the high jump. The rest of
the field is equally close as the 100 meter hurdles, high
jump, shot put, and 200 meters were competed on the first
day. Christina Acquaviva, a junior from SUNY-Cortland, is
third with 2,889 points followed by Audrey Boothe of Wheaton
(Illinois) who has a first day total of 2,843. Pacific (Oregon)
has Brooke Barker in fifth (2,797), while Luther's Emily
Pankow is the first of four Iowa Conference athletes in
sixth with 2,774 points. Barker was the other event winner,
claiming the shot put. Meredith Withers of Roanoke is in
seventh with 2,756 points and Emory University's Ashley
Demarco and Messiah's Amy Reed round out the top eight as
both are tied with 2,659 points. Five other athletes are
over 2,600 total points. The long jump, javelin, and 800
meters remain for Friday.
Decathlon Day One Recap
The first day of competition has come to a conclusion in
the decathlon. The leader after day one is Matt Roberson
of Claremont Mudd Scripps with 3,706 points. Roberson, the
highest seeded competitor in the event, captured first in
two of the day's five events winning the long jump and 400
meter dash. UW-Whitewater's Adam Lendowski is in second
with 3,630 points. Lendowski has also won two events, taking
first in the 100 meter dash and the high jump. Zane Buckingham
of St. Lawrence won the other event of the day, the high
jump. Buckingham is currently third with 3,622 points. Kristoph
Becker of Middlebury is in fourth with 3,600 and Fritz Nugent
from the University of Redlands is fifth with 3,562. Athletes
from George Fox occupy slots seven and eight. Seth Harris
has 3,542 points and Josh Preister has 3,380 total points.
Erik Jensen of Pacific Lutheran is in eighth with 3,331
points.
Women's Long Jump
The University of St. Thomas' Kristal Grigsby capped her
career with an NCAA Championship in the long jump, her third.
Grigsby placed third last year after beginning her career
with back-to-back titles. Grigsby's stadium record leap
of 19-0 ¾" was ¼" farther than runner-up
Kate Ross of Lewis and Clark. Erin Kokta of UW-Eau Claire
placed third with a mark of 18'10", while John Carroll's
Jen Kahn was fourth (18'8"). Erin Powell of Nebraska
Wesleyan (18'7"), Caroline Doctor of Williams (18'6
1/2"), Calvin's Lisa Winkle (18'5 ¾"),
and Sarah Thayer of UW-LaCrosse (18'5") rounded out
the All-America honorees.
Women's 4x100 Meter Preliminaries
Lincoln University's relay team posted the fastest time
in Friday's qualifying. Lincoln ran 46.59, quicker than
second place City College of New York (46.70). SUNY-Oneonta
ran 47.10 to put them third. The rest of the qualifiers
for Saturday's final shape up like this, UW-LaCrosse (47.28),
Texas Lutheran (47.30), Wartburg (47.30), College of New
Jersey (47.40), last year's winner, St. Thomas (47.80),
and Calvin (47.89).
Men's 4x100 Meter Preliminaries
The field for Saturday's finals of the men's 400 meter relay
has been set. Mount Union College posted the fastest time
in Friday's preliminaries, running 40.31. McMurry, which
ran in the same heat as Mount Union, is seeded second at
40.40. New Jersey City University posted a time of 40.81,
third quickest, while Greenville's 40.93. Nebraska Wesleyan
ran 41.01, Lincoln ran 41.20, Central posted a time of 41.25,
UW-Whitewater is eighth with a time of 41.45, and the final
qualifier is Capital University with a preliminary time
of 41.47.
Men's Pole Vault
Due to wet conditions created by spurts of periodic light
rain at Benedictine University, the men's pole vault competition
was moved back to Saturday at 11:00 am.
Women's 1,500 Meters
North Central College's Amber Druien will lead the field
of 12 in the finals of the women's 1,500 meters. Druien,
a junior, ran a time of 4:29.51, just .04 faster than Keene
State's Breanne Lucey. Two wide open sections saw six runners
under 4:31.
Men's 1,500 Meters
The field of 17 has been whittled down to 12 for Saturday's
finals of the 1,500 meters. Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer posted
the fastest time, running 3:50.01. Nick Symmonds of Willamette
University, the 2005 1,500 meter champion, ran 3:50.57 to
place him fourth.
Women's 400 Meter Hurdles
Seven of the nine qualifiers in the women's 400 meter hurdles
bettered the 2006 Division III best time led by Sheana Grigsby
of Carthage College. The senior ran 60.19, a stadium record
that bested the runner-up Jen Dias of Rensselaer Poly Institute
(60.56).
Men's 400 Meter Hurdles
Jeff Jasmin posted the top time to date in the 400 meter
hurdles as the Lincoln University senior qualified first
for the finals of the 400 meter hurdles (51.59). A quick
preliminary field saw no one make the final nine with a
time over 53 seconds. The top three qualifiers all bested
the top mark in the nation this season.
Men's Discus
Dan Austin of Williams College repeated as the NCAA discus
champion by throwing 195'0". Austin bested second place
Pete Ringquist of UW-Whitewater by over 15 feet. UW-Whitewater
throwers occupied the second and third slots as Dan Hytinen
took third (177'01"). Millikin's Lance Brooks was fourth
(176'9") followed by Mount Union's Justin Rodhe (170'11").
The other All-Americans in the men's discus were UW-Stout's
Ryan Kawaski (164'4"), SUNY-Cortland's Marcus Matyas
(164'3"), and Derek Marks of St. Thomas rounded out
the field by throwing 163'9".
Women's 200 Meters
Shanda Jackson of Lincoln University bested the top time
in Division III this season by running 23.97 in the preliminaries
on Thursday. SUNY-Oneonta's Musu Jackson-Buckner also topped
the previous season best time by running 24.00, the second
best time.
Men's 200 Meters
McMurry University placed three individuals in the finals
of the men's 200 meters, but UW-LaCrosse's Nate Olson posted
the top time in preliminaries (21.07). UW-LaCrosse also
put Michael Queensland in the finals after running 21.07.
2005 champion Greg Nixon of Howard Payne posted the second
quickest time of the prelims, running 21.10.
Women's 10,000 Meters
Williams College's Caroline Cretti claimed the title in
the women's 10,000 meters, outdistancing the field by over
40 seconds in winning with a time of 35:10.42. Toni Wiszowati
of SUNY-Plattsburg was second in 35:52.06. Katie Wieferich
from the College of Wooster boasted a third place finish,
coming home in 35:53.55. Jennifer Adams of Keene State was
fourth (35:57.23). Allison Busby was the second Plattsburg
runner to earn All-America, placing fifth in 36:00.39. Hamline's
Keidra Anderson placed sixth (36:19.44), while E. Kristi
Dickey (seventh, 36:26.94) and Liz Gleason (eighth, 36:32.41)
rounded out the All-Americans.
Men's Long Jump
Paul Klemic repeated as the Division III long jump champion,
winning with a leap of 24'9 ¾". The senior from
Richard Stockton NJ topped second place Greg Tyson from
Heidelburg. UW-Whitewater's Derek Stanley earned third place
(23'11 ¾"). Broderick Maybank from McDaniel
(23'10") and Jed Droge of Nebraska Wesleyan (23'8 ¾")
placed fourth and fifth respectively. Ryan Robertson of
Ohio Northern was sixth (23'8") while Brandon Copeland
(Bridgewater) and Brandon Mirach (Williams) rounded out
the All-Americans with marks of 23'4 ¾" and
23'4".
Men's 10,000 Meters
Macharia Yuot of Widener University won a close race in
the men's 10,000 meters. Yuot's time of 30:26.99 bested
Brian Donovan of the College of New Jersey (30:28.58). Crosby
Freeman from Pomona Pitzer took home third in 30:31.84.
William Kaul, a freshman from UW-Oshkosh was fourth (30:46.29).
Fred Joslyn from SUNY-Cortland placed fifth (30:49.43) while
Calvin's Tim Finnegan (30:55.31) claimed sixth. UW-Oshkosh
senior Nicholas Boehlke placed seventh (31:02.16) and Matt
Liebal of Dickinson College claimed the last spot on the
award stand by running 31:17.70.
