The Lecturers listed are individuals who have been employed as instructors on an as-needed basis,
within the last several years, to teach courses at Benedictine University. Instructors listed may not
currently be employed by Benedictine University. The University is fortunate to be able to provide our
students with part-time faculty whose experience, credentials and commitment to education add to the high quality of our resident faculty.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the Nutrition Program (Didactic Program in Dietetics), the nutrition major will successfully:
1)Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively. 2)Demonstrate knowledge and application of nutrition counseling and group education principles. 3)Demonstrate technological literacy. 4)Demonstrate knowledge, application and integration of the principles of the physical and biological sciences into food and nutrition. 5)Demonstrate knowledge and integration of the principles of the social sciences into food and nutrition. 6)Demonstrate knowledge and application of research methodologies into food and nutrition sciences. 7)Demonstrate knowledge of ethical principles. 8)Demonstrate knowldge, application and integration of principles of food. 9)Demonstrate knowledge, application and integration of principles of normal, clinical and community nutrition. 10)Demonstrate knowledge and application of health promotion. 11)Demonstrate knowledge and aplication of management theories and systems. 12)Demonstrate knowledge of health care delivery systems. 13)Demonstrate problem solving and critical thinking skills through informal and formal written exercises. 14)Develop a Nutrition Achievement Portfolio.
Requirements - Major:
The nutrition major must complete, with a "C" or better
University Skills and Core: RHET-S101(3), S102(3), S110(3); ANTH-C200(3); PSYC-100(3); MGT-320(3); and an ethics course.
Cognates: CHEM-C101(3), 102(1), 103(3), 104(1); BIOL-108(3), 109(1), 208(4), 258(4), 358(4); BCHM-C261(3); and BIOL-229(3) or PSYC-150(3).
Nutrition Science Courses: NUTR-C241(3), 244(3), 245(3), 246(1), 250(2), 271(3), 280(3), 350(3), 341(4), 371(3), 372(2), 373(1), 391(1), 392(2), 395(1), and practicum (1).
Students are strongly encouraged, although not required, to maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
Following completion of this accredited Nutrition Program (Didactic Program in Dietetics), students will be awarded a Foundation Knowledge and Skills Verification Statement. Verified graduates qualify to take the Registration Examination for Registered Dietitians upon culmination of an accredited post-baccalaureate Dietetic Internship program.
Nutrition, B.S., affiliation with the Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness (M.S.N.W.): With careful planning of the undergraduate course sequence, this program offers the student the possibility of completing select cross-listed courses to meet some of the requirements of the M.S.N.W. program while an undergraduate student. Admission to the graduate program is not automatic. The student must meet graduate program admissions requirements.
Nutrition, B.S., affiliation with the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) Program: This program offers the student the possibility of completing select courses to meet some of the requirements of the M.P.H. degree program while an undergraduate student. In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition, the student may complete the following courses as an undergraduate (taken as electives): NUTR-381(3), 382(3), 383(3). Admission to the graduate program is not automatic. The student must meet graduate program admissions requirements.
Nutrition, B.S., affiliation with the Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology (M.C.E.P.) Program: This program offers the student the possibility of completing select courses to meet some of the requirements of the M.C.E.P. degree program while an undergraduate student. In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition, the following required courses may be taken as an undergraduate: BIOL-203(4), 229(3), 268 (3); HLSC-321(1), 322(1), 360(3), 361(3), 380(2), 390(2), 392 (3); and NUTR- 342(2), 343(1). BIOL-259(1) and MATH-111(3) are strongly recommended. Admission to the graduate program is not automatic. The student must meet graduate program admissions requirements.
Requirements - Minor:
Students seeking a minor in nutrition must complete, with a grade of "C" or better, CHEM-C101(3), C102(1), C103(3), C104(1), [or CHEM-C113(3), C114(1), C123(3), C124(1), 242(3), 243(1), 247(3), 248(1)]; BCHM-C261(3) or 361(3); NUTR-C241(3), NUTR-341(4) or 371(3), and at least 12 additional semester hours in nutrition. No more than three 100-level NUTR credits may count toward the minor. Practica hours cannot count toward the minor.
Requirements - Other:
ADA verification in Nutrition: Qualified students who hold a bachelor degree from another institution may enroll in additional courses to complete the accredited program requirements after evaluation of transcripts by the Enrollment Center and Nutrition Program Director at Benedictine University. A second degree may be awarded to those in the Second Degree Program. Upon successful completion of the requirements, the Foundation Didactic Knowledge and Skills will be awarded
