Objectives:
1. Provide students with an opportunity to understand, appreciate, experience, compare, and evaluate the cultures and cultural expressions of different societies.
2. Prepare students to live in an increasingly multicultural world and meet the needs of employers who see a workforce capable of meeting the challenges of that world.
3. Introduce students to close reading and analysis of the literary and cultural texts that shape our world.
4. Help students recognize the close relationship between language and culture, enabling them to become culturally sensitive to non-English-speaking peoples and societies.
5. Develop the personal and professional attributes necessary to navigate a foreign culture through study abroad.
6. Develop students' ability to understand complex ideas and create clear, effective critical arguments, both orally and on paper.
7. Train students in the use of advanced communicative and creative technologies.
8. Encourage students to develop collaborative, interpersonal and persuasive skills by working closely with faculty and each other.
9. Prepare students for graduate school and/or professional careers by covering both traditional and contemporary approaches to texts, writing, and research.

Requirements - Major:
The World Literature major is designed to integrate studies in English Language and Literature with studies in Spanish Language and Literature (or other languages if available; see Department Chair for details). World Literature majors must complete at least 36 hours in the Department of Languages and Literature, with a grade of "C" or better, including LITR-100(3); SPAN 211(3), SPAN 212(3), LITR 259(3), LITR 264(3), LITR 305(3), LITR 399(3), plus three additional 300 level literature courses (9 hours), at least one of which must be in English and at least one of which must be in the language of the student's concentration. In addition, World Literature majors are required to participate in a study abroad experience in a Spanish speaking country, during which they must complete one 200 level civilization and culture course (3 hours) in Spanish and one 200 level literature course (3 hours) in Spanish.
