Welcome to the homepage of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at Benedictine University.
The Department is the heart of the College of Liberal Arts, housing the majors that form the foundation of the university tradition: History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies—the latter including our major in Theology. It also houses the University's interdisciplinary major in Global Studies.
The Department's greatest asset is its faculty, each member of which holds a doctorate from the nation's finest institutions. We pride ourselves on serving as master teachers and as mentors to our students. We expect them to learn to think, read, write, and speak effectively, and to acquire foundational knowledge in their chosen fields of study. In so doing, we strive to produce graduates with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and desire for life-long learning that will enable them to be leaders in their communities and on the global stage.
In addition to emphasizing quality teaching and learning, our Department values scholarship, creative expression, and a commitment to civic service. We celebrate diversity in people and ideas. We foster civility, ethical behavior, and personal responsibility. And we embrace our role as citizens in an increasingly interdependent world.
We invite you to explore our web site to learn more about the Department, our faculty, and our programs of study. We also encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or need additional information.
