Office 365 is Microsoft's cloud-based service that will provide email to BenU's student community as of August 23, 2013. You will now gain new functionality as well as drive space on Microsoft's SkyDrive. These new features are listed below.
Login using your normal Ben.edu credentials. The only difference is that you need to use your B-number along with the ben.edu domain (email@example.com) instead of just your B-number.
Absolutely! You do not need to be connected to the university's network, only to the Internet. You can check your email from any browser but you may find that there is additional functionality when using Internet Explorer.
Any emails that you have been keeping in the legacy should be forwarded to your new inbox. This is an incredibly easy thing to do. Simply log in to the old mail system and forward (don't "reply") each email you want to keep to blank firstname.lastname@example.org.
Shortly after Office 365 goes live, IT will be shutting down the legacy email system, so please make sure all of your important emails are forwarded.
You have until October 1, 2013 to forward all of your existing emails on the legacy email system to your new inbox. Just forward the existing email to YourBnumber@benil.onmicrosoft.com.
If you have existing emails in the legacy email system that you want to reply to, you should first forward the email to your new inbox and then reply as usual from there. If your reply is going to an email address outside of Ben.edu, then you shouldn't encounter any difficulties. However, if you reply to an existing email from another Benedictine student, you will receive a delivery error.
So please forward those emails to YourBnumber@benil.onmicrosoft.com first.

You sure can!
Outlook is probably the most common email client and is very easy to setup with Office 365. Outlook 2010 and 2013 have a special function called Autodiscover. Using this, Outlook should be able to get all of the necessary server information automatically, saving you time and effort.
If you're using a university computer and you're on-campus:
If you're using your own computer or you are off-campus:
Unfortunately, you can't forward your email to Office 365 before August 23. However, you can (and are encouraged to) forward emails to a different personal email account on Gmail, Hotmail, etc. now and, once Office 365 is live on August 23, you can forward them again to Office 365.
If you want to reply to a Benedictine student's email that is older than August 23, you will need to clear Outlook's cache first. If you don't clear your cache, Outlook will attempt to send the email to the student's legacy inbox and you will eventually receive a delivery error.
To clear Outlook's cache:
Your B-number is used for logging and, yes, it requires that you add the ben.edu to the end (email@example.com).
However, your email "friendly name" will still be firstname.lastname@example.org. When you send an email, it will appear from email@example.com. When giving out your email address to other people, give them your email address instead of your B-number.
If you had previously been enrolled in our Email For Life program, the change to Office 365 may have caused your account to break or go missing.
If this has happened to you, please contact the Benedictine Information Center at 630/829.6684 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
SkyDrive is Microsoft's cloud-based storage service. You can use this to store, sync, and share your Benedictine files. By default, any file you upload to SkyDrive is private but you do have the option of sharing documents with other people. Please read the help section of SkyDrive for more information on how to do that.
You have a total of 25 GB of storage space.
As of Friday, August 23, access to your "H" drive will be cut off and your account to SkyDrive will be live.
