Staying Connected

While abroad, there are so many different opportunities and experiences that you will have which will become life changing. Being in another country for a long period of time does come with benefits, but it also has some challenges. Some of these challenges are difficulties in communicating with close friends or family members and becoming homesick. During your trip you should not be discouraged because this happens very often to people who are in a different culture for a period of time. There are many different techniques that can help you communicate with your friends or family thanks to today's technology.

Even though you may not have access to data in other countries, there will most likely be Wi-Fi in certain areas in which you can use to message or even video chat with them. Some popular apps that will allow you to communicate over Wi-Fi are Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, iMessage, Facetime, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, and Skype. All of these apps are free and are easy to use while on your abroad program.

As for homesickness, it will not go away overnight and will require time to become accustomed to a new routine. Take advantage of exploring new places and make new friends rather than wishing you were home. It is important to understand that being homesick cannot be rushed and that you will overcome at your own pace. Homesickness is a completely normal reaction if you aren't used to being away from friends and family for periods of time.  By making the most of your opportunities, you can make your study abroad trip a great memory of exciting events that you could not experience in your home country.
