Food, Drink & Noise Policy

Introduction

The mission of the Benedictine University Library is to meet the academic and research needs of the Benedictine University community. Because we want the library to be a comfortable environment in which to work and study, there are a few guidelines regarding food, drink, and noise that we ask all patrons to follow to ensure the library remains a clean, quiet and welcoming place for everyone.

Food & Beverages

Food and beverages are allowed in the library as long as these guidelines are followed:

  • All beverages must be in containers with secure lids or caps.
  • Personal servings of food are allowed in covered, sealed containers.
  • All wrappers, cups and containers should be taken with you or discarded in appropriate trash containers when you leave. Clean up any spills or messes.

If inappropriate food or drinks are brought into the library, the library staff will ask you to remove them.

Noise

Library patrons are expected to keep noise to a reasonable level in all areas of the library. Please report any incidents of excessive noise to the Circulation Desk either in person or by calling the Circulation Desk from the phones near the elevator on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors.

  • The 3rd and 4th floors are designated "quiet study" areas. Please keep talking and noise to a minimum on these floors, including in the study rooms. Keep in mind that the study rooms are not well insulated, and excessive noise can be clearly heard outside.

  • Patrons needing to work in groups are strongly encouraged to use a study room. Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis, or may be reserved in advance by contacting the Circulation Desk. Computer-equipped study rooms are available on the 5th floor for group projects requiring a computer.

  • All use of audio-visual devices in the library, including personal CD players, radios, or computers, require the use of headphones. Headphones can be checked out from the Circulation Desk.

  • Cell phones and pagers should be turned off or set to low/non-audible signals. If it is necessary for you to make or answer a call please keep conversations brief and quiet, or take your call outside the library. Using stairwells, bathrooms or study rooms for calls is not acceptable.

The library staff reserves the right to ask persons who are being noisy or disruptive to leave the library.
