Biographical Note

The St. Wenceslaus Server's Society (also known as the Server's Sodality) was founded in 1914, and was the first student organization at St. Procopius College. According to the Society's constitution, its mission was "to instruct the members in the proper manner of assisting as servers at liturgical functions", "to promote the social and educational advancement of the members", and "to create and promote interest in missionary work, both local and foreign, particularly by forwarding educational activities". All students attending the College or Academy at St. Procopius were encouraged to apply for membership.

Students wishing to become members submitted a written application at the beginning of the school year, and were required to pay annual dues of 50 cents if accepted. Offices in the Society included President and Vice-President (elected positions), as well as Secretary and Treasurer (appointed positions). Members of the Society were expected to "attend all meetings and to perform diligently all obligations imposed upon him". Essentially this meant assisting in the Masses held by the monks in St. Procopius Abbey, but the Society was also engaged in numerous social and charitable activites.

In 1959, membership and interest in the Society reached an all-time low. In a letter dated June 12, 1959, Dismas Kalcic, O.S.B. expressed his disappointment with the Servers to Adolph Hrdlicka, O.S.B. Students "simply refused to get up" on mornings when they were scheduled to serve. Kalcic then recommends to Hrdlicka that the Society be discontinued.

<scopecontent>
Of particular note in this series is a long letter from Peter F. Mizera, O.S.B. while studying in Rome, written to an unknown party at St. Procopius College. It indicates, among other things, his longing to return home to play baseball again. Other correspondence concerns the Catholic Students' Mission Crusade, the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, an extended firsthand account of the conversions of the Caldey monks, and a new church being built in Annecy, France. Also included is a letter from a priest in the South Kanara province of India in which he describes the difficulty of running a parish in this area in 1920.
