How to use our materials

Before using Archives & Special Collections, you will be asked to complete and sign a registration form and produce a photo ID. The following policies and procedures reflect an attempt to both meet the needs of our researchers and preserve our unique holdings.

•  Food and beverages are not allowed in the Archives & Special Collections reading room. Coats, hats, umbrellas, bags, briefcases, etc., may not be brought into the reading room with the researcher. A member of the staff will assist you in securing these items elsewhere. The Library is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
•  The use of ink is prohibited. Please use pencils.
•  Please take care when handling materials, and kindly inform a member of the staff if you notice particularly fragile or damaged material. Keep documents flat on the table. Turn loose pages carefully and preserve the arrangement of the materials.
•  Only one box of materials can be provided for viewing at a time.
•  Users agree to abide by the U.S. Copyright Law (title 17, U.S. Code). Receipt of copies of material does not convey copyright permission. It is the researcher's responsibility to insure full compliance with all relevant copyright laws. In addition, users agree to abide by any restrictions placed on materials. Information on restrictions is available from the staff.
•  Please do not exit the reading room with manuscript materials.

For help on doing research using manuscript materials, see the Manuscripts Research Tutorial developed by the Manuscripts Department at the University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill
