Persistent Links

What is a Persistent Link?

A persistent link is a URL that remains constant over time so users can access the linked content later. Persistent links are also called permanent, stable, or durable URLs, or PURLs. Once you construct a persistent link for an article, eBook, or streaming video from a BenU Library subscription database, you can share it anywhere, such as in your D2L course pages, and be confident that the link will lead to the intended content.

What is a Proxy Server?

A proxy server, or proxy, acts as an intermediary between your web browser and subscription content that requires authentication. The BenU Library’s proxy prefix is: http://libweb.ben.edu/login?url=. Including this prefix in your link will bring users to the Library Login page when they are off-campus so that they can log in with their BU Login. In almost all cases, you will need this prefix to construct a persistent link.

What is a DOI?

A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique character string that identifies a particular electronic item and remains constant over time (e.g., 10.1016/j.marpol.2014.03.028). In some cases, you will need a DOI to construct a persistent link.  The beginning of a proxied DOI URL is: http://libweb.ben.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/.

How To Insert Persistent Links in D2L

Use the Insert Stuff tool to link to library resources. The Insert Quicklinks tool does not work for proxied resources.
