Formatting a paper & bibliography with RefWorks & Write-N-Cite

About Write-N-Cite
  • Free plugin from RefWorks
  • Must be installed on PC
  • Must be connected to Internet to use
  • Operating system & word processor requirements:
    • Windows: Microsoft Word 2000 or later
    • Word for Macintosh 98 or later with operating system Mac OS X version 10.3 or later

What Write-N-Cite does
  • Lets you insert in-line references
    from RefWorks as you type your paper
  • Will create a formatted bibliography with
    all the references
    you used

Installing Write-N-Cite
  • Go to www.refworks.com
  • Log in to your RefWorks account

  • Click on Tools menu à Write-N-Cite

  • Click on a link to begin download

  • Choose installation options

  • When installation finishes you will have a Write-N-Cite icon on your desktop
  • and a Write-N-Cite toolbar in Word (if you chose this option at installation)

  • Start Write-N-Cite from the toolbar in Word            (if you chose this option at installation)...
  • or from the Write-N-Cite icon on your desktop       (this will also automatically open Word)

  • Log in to your RefWorks account

  • Your RefWorks citations will display

  • To use a specific folder go to Viewà  Folder & select a folder

Start typing your paper

Select the citation from the Write-N-Cite window & click “cite”

Write-N-Cite will insert a citation placeholder for your citation

Your completed paper will look something like this

  • Here is an example of another reference {{54 Budinger,T.,F. 1999; }}, and another one besides that {{56 Contag,Christopher,H. 2002; }}.
  • You can also insert multiple references {{65 Drew,Barry 1 2003;411 Marques,C.N. 2005;  }}.

When your paper is done, click on “Bibliography”

Choose the citation style (“output style”) to use

Click “Create Bibliography”

You should receive a confirmation message...

...and your formatted paper will appear in another Word document, with the word “Final” in front of your document’s name

The inline “placeholders” will be replaced with properly formatted citations...

...and your formatted bibliography will appear at the end

Check your paper & bibliography for errors (“Garbage in, garbage out”...)
    • Authors or titles in ALL CAPS?
    • Misspellings?
    • Incomplete citations?
  • Fix any problems in RefWorks and/or your original paper, then re-run “Create Bibliography”
