Computers, photocopiers & other equipment

Where are computers located in the library? Do all computers have Word, Excel, etc. on them?

Do I need a login to use library computers? How do I get a login?

  • All library computers require a login. Persons not affiliated with the University may use the library "research" computers in the South carrels on the 2nd floor by asking the Reference Librarian to log them in.
  • Student logins can be obtained by calling the Benedictine University Help Desk at (630) 829-6684.

Where are printers located? Is there a charge for printing?

Printers are located on the 2nd floor. There is no charge for printing to Benedictine students, faculty or staff. All other patrons are charged five cents per page for printing. Please pay for printing at the Circulation Desk.

Does the library have scanners?

The library has two flatbed scanners attached to the assistive technology computers on the 2nd floor. They are available for general student use as long as visually impaired patrons do not need to use these computers.

What type of assistive computing technologies does the library have?

The library has Jaws screen-reading software as well as OpenBook, an application that scans printed matter and converts it to large text and/or speech. Please see the Reference Librarian for more information.

Where can I get help using computers or software?

For help with computers and software, contact the Benedictine University Help Desk at (630) 829-6684. The library staff can provide some simple troubleshooting and assistance under limited circumstances as time permits.

Where are photocopiers located? What do copies cost?

Copiers are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Copies are 10 cents per side copied (that is, one-sided copies are 10 cents and two-sided copies are 20 cents). The copy machines only take copy cards -- they will not accept coins or bills.

How do I purchase a copy card? What if I only need to make a few copies?

  • The copy card vending machine is located next to the 2nd floor copier. These copy cards may be used at all public copiers throughout the University.
  • Intial purchase of a copy card costs $1.00 and you must purchase the card with a dollar bill. (Subsequent refills of your card can take denominations other than a dollar bill; it is only the initial purchase of the card that requires a dollar bill.) The initial card will be issued to you with 5 copies on it.
  • The card may then be refilled with more money. When you refill the card, you will receive full value for the dollar amount applied (that is, if you refill the card for $5.00 you will receive $5.00 in copies).
  • If you only need to make one or two copies, you can borrow a copy card from the Circulation Desk and pay for your copies there in cash.

How do I use the microfilm & microfiche reader/printers? What is the charge for printing from them?

Two types of microfilm/fiche reader/printers are available. Both are located on the 3rd floor. The computer-based reader/printer creates files in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format that users can save, e-mail or print. There is no charge for using the computer-based reader. The older reader/printer prints only, at a charge of ten cents per page. For assistance with both types of machines please ask at the Reference Desk.

Where does the library have VHS & DVD players?

  • A combination TV/VHS player is located in the North carrels on the 2nd floor. It requires headphones to use. Headphones may be checked out from the Circulation Desk.
  • A combination TV/VHS player is located in study room 406 on the 4th floor. This room is very popular so we recommend that you reserve it in advance with the Circulation Desk, either in person or by calling (630) 829-6050.
  • The library's two loaner laptops have built-in DVD drives. Laptops can be reserved in advance with the Circulation Desk, either in person or by calling (630) 829-6050.
