Troubleshooting EZproxy connections
from off campus
|
- EZproxy is a service that handles logging in off-campus
users to Benedictine Library's databases. If you are experiencing
difficulties accessing databases from off-campus that
use EZproxy to log you in, please check the following:
- Only currently
enrolled students, faculty and staff may access
these resources from off campus due to licensing restrictions.
If you are not one of the above (for example, an alumnus,
Benet Academy student, or Lisle Public Library patron),
you are welcome to use these resources in the library,
but we cannot grant off-campus access.
- Are you typing
in your last name and 14-digit Library ID Number correctly?
(If you're not sure what your Library ID Number is, please
see this page).
- Are you in the
library patron database? (If you've recently
checked books out from the library you are.) Most students
are automatically added at the beginning of each semester.
If you're not sure if you are in the patron database,
call the Circulation Desk at 630-829-6050 to verify your
status.
- Is your browser
set to accept cookies? EZproxy uses "session
cookies." Session cookies are deleted at the end
of your session and are not saved on your computer. However,
you must allow EZproxy to set a cookie to be able to log
in and use the databases. To set/check your cookie settings:
- Netscape versions 6 & 7: Click Edit ->
Preferences. Click the small "+" sign next
to Privacy & Security and click on the word "Cookies."
Select "Enable All Cookies" and click OK.
- Netscape (previous versions): Click Edit
-> Preferences -> Advanced. Choose "Accept
All Cookies" and click OK.
- Internet Explorer version 5: Click Tools
-> Internet Options -> Security. Click the "Custom
Level" button. Scroll down to the "Cookies"
setting and select "Enable."
- Internet Explorer version 6: Click Tools
-> Internet Options -> Privacy. Click the "Advanced"
button. Select "Accept" under ""First
Party Cookes" and "THird Party Cookies."
Click next to "Always allow session cookies"
so there is a checkmark in the box, then click "OK."
- Are you getting an error message
only in EBSCOhost? When using EBSCOhost you
may encounter the error, "we have detected a change
to your IP address for the current session and we are
unable to locate a valid EBSCO cookie. As a result we
are unable to identify you as a legitimate user. Please
log in again." This is due to how EBSCOhost handles
session cookies. An explanation of this error, and how
to prevent it from appearing, is at http://support.epnet.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?faq=2432.
- Is Javascript
turned on? (Javascript is usually enabled by
default, but some users turn it off)
- Netscape: Click Edit -> Preferences ->
Advanced. Select "Enable Javascript."
- Internet Explorer: Click Tools -> Internet
Options -> Security. Click the "Custom Level"
button. Scroll down to the Scripting settings and select
"Enable" for all options listed under Scripting.
- Firefox: Click Tools --> Options -->
Content. Check "Enable Javascript" box.
- Are you using
AOL? There are known
problems with using the AOL browser. You can use AOL to
connect to the Internet, but once connected use either
Netscape or Internet Explorer to connect to our databases.
- Do you have a
personal firewall installed on your PC? Personal
firewalls can sometimes cause problems with EZproxy. Temporarily
disable the firewall and see if that allows you to connect
properly.
- If after working through this list you are still experiencing
problems logging in, please call the Reference Desk at
(630) 829-6057 or send e-mail to libref@ben.edu.
