What is Find it @ BU?
Find it @ BU is based
on a service called SFX that allows you to
seamlessly link from citations in selected databases to
the full text of the item in another database. It can
also link you to other information or services related
to the item, such as a search of the library's catalog,
an option to export the item's citation to RefWorks,
to interlibrary loan forms, or to help/FAQ pages such
as this one.
How do I use Find it @ BU?
Note: not all of the library's databases connect
to or from Find it @ BU.
Please see the list
below for databases which have this capability,
either as a "source" (a database in which you
will see the Find it @ BU button
or link) or as a "target" (a database to which
you can link to full text content from a Find
it @ BU menu), or both.
- Do a database search, and view the list of results.
- If the full text of the article you want is not already
available in that database, click on the
button to bring up a menu of links. The links lead to
where the full text of the item is located, or possibly
to other information or services, such as a link to an
interlibrary loan form if the full text of the item is
not available through Benedictine.
- Click the
button on the menu to connect to that link.
Will Find it @ BU work from off campus?
Yes. Once you log in with your Library ID number and
last name, the Find it @ BU
menus will be available to you.
Why are there multiple links to the same
article?
If the article is available in more than one database,
the Find it @ BU menu
will list all possible sources. This lets you retrieve
the article from a different database if your first choice
is not available for some reason.
When I clicked
I ended up on the journal's home page or table of contents
instead of linking to the full text of the article. What
happened?
Some journal databases or Web sites are not set up to
be able to link directly to articles, or the citation
information within the link may be incomplete or incorrect.
In that case Find it @ BU
will get you as close to the article as it can, usually
to the journal's home page or that issue's table of contents.
From there you will need to search for, or browse to,
the article you want.
If I go back and select a different
resource from the
menu, it doesn't seem to work the second time. What happened?
This is an Internet Explorer problem. When you first
click GO on a menu selection, IE opens a new browser window
on top of your other open windows. However, when you make
another selection the new browser window is not promoted
to the top again and may get "buried" under
other open windows. Check your toolbar (at the bottom
of your screen) for open IE windows and open them in turn.
The results of your menu selection will be in one of the
other open browser windows.
There are no full text links to the article
I want. Now what?
Full text is not always available for a variety of reasons:
- The library doesn't subscribe to that journal electronically
- The publisher does not make an electronic version
available (or only makes it available some time after
the print version is published, known as an "embargo")
- The article is in a database that is not compatible
with Find it @ BU
- The article is too old to have an electronic version
Click on the link to Benedictine's
Journal Holdings List to see if the library
owns the journal in print or microform or if it is available
in a database that cannot use Find
it @ BU. If the journal is not listed, you
can request a copy of the article by using the "Interlibrary
Loan Forms" link on the Find
it @ BU menu, or click here
to access a menu of ILL forms.
I have a citation for an article. How
do I find the full text for it?
How do I use Google Scholar with Find
it @ BU?
Information on this feature is forthcoming.
