Using Google Scholar to access Benedictine
University Library resources
|
Many of the library's resources can now be searched and
full text accessed through Google Scholar. However, keep
in mind the following:
- Google Scholar only links to a subset of the books &
articles to which the library has access. For more complete
information it is best to search the library's databases
from the library's
home page.
- Google Scholar is fairly strong in science and technology
subjects but relatively weak in coverage of the humanities.
- Google Scholar does not know when the library has a
print subscription to a journal, nor can it match an incomplete
citation (for example, if the date of publication is missing).
For articles, search the library's Journal
Holdings List using the title of the journal
in which the article appears. For books, search the I-SHARE
catalog.
On-campus users are automatically recognized by
Google Scholar as being affiliated with Benedictine. A link
labeled "Full text @ BenU Library" will be displayed
in any citation to which Benedictine has holdings.
Off-campus users must configure Google Scholar's Preferences
so they will be recognized by Google Scholar as being affiliated
with Benedictine. To set preferences:
- Go to http://scholar.google.com
- Click on Google
Scholar Preferences link to the right of the search
box.
- Type "Benedictine" (without quotes) in the
Library Links box and click Find Library.
- You should see a line below the Library Links box labeled
"Benedictine University (Full text @ BenU Library)."
If there is not a checkmark in the box to the left, click
in the box to set one.
- Click Save Preferences.
- Perform your search in Google Scholar.

If the Benedictine Library has
the full text of the article, the record will look like:

Clicking on the "Full text @ BenU Library"
link will bring up a "FindIt@BU" menu, where you
can click on links to bring you to the full text of the
article.
|
|
|
|
If the Benedictine Library does not have the full text
of the article, the record will look like:

Clicking on the "Check BenU for more info"
link will lead you to a FindIt@BU menu, where you can search
the Journal Holdings List or place an interlibrary loan
request for the article.
IMPORTANT: Before placing an interlibrary loan request,
we strongly recommend you search the Journal Holdings List
(a link is at the bottom of the FindIt@BU screen) to make
sure the library does not have access to this article in
a different database, as Google Scholar's holdings are incomplete.

If you do not see either of the BenU-specific links, click
on the title of the article to see if it will lead you to
full text. If it does not:
