How do I...request an article from a FirstSearch database on interlibrary loan?

FirstSearch is a collection of databases in various subjects. Popular databases in FirstSearch include ABI - INFORM, Medline, PerAbs, and Wilson Select Plus, but there are many more. All FirstSearch databases use the same interlibrary loan form.

Before you request an article on interlibrary loan, always check the Journal Holdings List to make sure the journal the article is in is not in full text in a different database, or is owned by the library in paper or microform format. Instructions for understanding the Journal Holdings List are found here.

1. Click into the "detailed record" for the article you wish to request. Your screen should look something like this:

firstsearch detail of article record

2. Click on the link that says "Borrow this item from another library (interlibrary loan)" or on the "ILL" icon near the top of the screen:

3. On the next screen, fill in the information requested. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. When finished filling in the form, click Submit.

4. You should see a confirmation message with a large green checkmark green checkmark that says "Your ILL request was sent successfully."

If you receive an error message instead of the confirmation message above, please contact the Reference Desk at libref@ben.edu or (630) 829-6057 for assistance.
