Introduction to RefWorks logo

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a Web-based citation manager that keeps track of all the sources you are using for your papers and projects. It can also automatically generate bibliographies in a variety of bibliographic formats (APA, MLA, University of Chicago) and a variety of citation formats required by specific journals (JAMA, etc.).

Please note that RefWorks is not recommended for searching the library's databases and catalogs. While RefWorks contains search capabilities, the search features in RefWorks do not include all of the databases available at the Benedictine Library, nor all of the search features and capabilities available within each database. Please consult a Reference Librarian for assistance with searching the library databases. Once you've located your resources, however, RefWorks is a great way to keep them organized.

Who can use RefWorks?

The Benedictine Library has paid for RefWorks to be available to all current Benedictine students, faculty and staff.

How do I use RefWorks?

There are 3 basic steps to using RefWorks.

  1. Set up a RefWorks account while logged into a Benedictine University computer. (While you can access RefWorks from off campus after you've set up your account, the initial setup must take place on campus. If you are in an off-campus cohort, please contact the Reference Desk about options for setting up your account.) [More info.]
  2. Enter your references. References can be entered by hand {this includes "cut & paste"} or imported from directly from the I-SHARE catalog and many of Benedictine's databases [More info.]
  3. Create your formatted bibliography and export it to several different document types (Word, HTML, RTF, etc.) [More info.]

What else can RefWorks do for me?

RefWorks also allows you to:

  • Organize your citations into various folders [More info.]
  • Allow others to view your RefWorks records by giving them a read-only password. [More info.]
  • Automatically insert citations to your references within your Microsoft Word document as you type it (requires optional Write-N-Cite plug-in installed on your computer) [More info.]
  • Export references to other bibliographic software packages such as EndNote. [More info.]

What can't RefWorks do?

  • Using RefWorks will help you to organize your citations, but you are still responsible for carefully reviewing each resource you cite for its accuracy and appropriateness for your paper or project.
  • While the import filters and export formats are very good, they are not perfect. You may need to do minor editing on the records within RefWorks (especially when importing records) and you'll still need to proofread the bibliographies RefWorks generates to make sure they are correct.
