4/15/07: Benedictine Library in The Daily Herald

Benedictine library wants ‘friends’ back
By Susan Dibble
Daily Herald Staff Herald

A good science collection, a small collection of children’s books and the papers of former Congressman John Erlenborn are a few of the resources available at the Benedictine University Library.

The library houses more than 126,000 books and provides access to more than 14,000 periodicals and 90 databases that are available for area residents to use.

To build on those resources and plan programs the larger community might want to attend, Jack Fritts, Benedictine’s director of library services, invites residents to become Friends of the Library.

A reception to explain what’s involved runs 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the library on the second floor of Kindlon Hall on campus, 5700 College Road, Lisle.

Benedictine President William Carroll and Dan Julius, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will speak briefly. The Rev. Michael Komechak, Benedictine’s art curator, will give a tour of some of the artwork displayed in and around the library. Light refreshments will be served.

Friends members will raise funds for materials not covered by the budget, plan programs and receive invitations to special events sponsored by the library, Fritts said.

"The time commitment is going to be up to the individual," he said. "What I’m really after is people to help us move forward."

The library already holds book talks that are open to the general community, but that programming could be expanded upon, Fritts said. Some Friends groups at other universities sponsor concerts as well as trips to museums and performances, he said.

Fritts said he’s wanted to start a Friends groups since he began his position at the Benedictine library five years ago. A previous Friends group no longer operates, he said.

Lisle residents can borrow materials from the Benedictine library, and the library is open for anyone to use, Fritts said.

"We have librarians who are friendly and helpful," he said.

Library hours are 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday noon to 11 p.m..

Sign-up information can be found at Friends of the Benedictine Library

4/2/07: Introducing the Photo of the Month

You will see a link to the Photo of the Month on the library’s homepage, so be sure to check it out!

However, you may place requests on any items that are already in the catalog as well as in Benedictine's catalog.

As with any major system upgrade, the introduction of a few problems or bugs is likely. Please note the library WILL continue to accept and process interlibrary loan requests during the upgrade. However, instead of using forms in I-SHARE, please use the library's online interlibrary loan request form at http://www.ben.edu/library/forms/ill_book.htm or search WorldCat for items and place requests through WorldCat's forms.

Wed. June 14, 5 p.m.: the I-SHARE catalog will be shut down until 8 a.m. Thursday, June 15.

Thurs. June 15: the I-SHARE catalog will be brought up in a "frozen" state: patron "MyAccount" records will also be frozen and online renewals will not be possible. 08/26/05: Library debuts Find it @ BU

Find it @ BU is based on a service called SFX that allows you to seamlessly link from citations in selected databases to the full text of the item in another database. If the full text of the article you want is not available in the database you're currently searching, look for a Find it @ BU button (the location of the button will vary with the database you're searching). Then click on the button to bring up a menu of links. The links lead to where the full text of the item is located, or possibly to other information or services, such as a link to an interlibrary loan form if the full text of the item is not available through Benedictine. For more information about how to use Find it @ BU, please see http://www.ben.edu/library/help/findit.htm.

08/26/05: Cell phone policy revised

For patron convenience, the Benedictine Library has established a "Phone Zone" in the West stairwell (near the elevator) to allow patrons on the upper floors of the library to make and recieve brief cell phone calls. We ask that cell phone users keep their voices down while in the "Phone Zone" as a courtesy to other patrons. Patrons on the 2nd (main) floor of the library can either go to the West stairwell or exit the library if they need to make or receive a call.

08/25/05: Fall news & announcements (From Jack Fritts, Director of Library Services)

We’ve been busy the past couple of months in the library. We have done some reclassifying and shifting of materials; a good deal of cleanup in the catalog to make things easier to find; and some major rearranging of our space (with more to come).

Computers Move to Second Floor: In order to better answer questions and address technical problems, the six computers and the printer in the common area of the fifth floor have been moved to the second floor. The computers in the study rooms on the fifth floor remain in place for group projects. Study room computers will print to the second floor. A computer is now also available on each floor to look up item locations or answer quick questions. You may view the change on the Virtual Library Tour

Electronic Reserves: Instructors may provide printed or electronic copies of materials to be placed on reserve or may ask the library to link to an electronic resource. WebCT or Internet knowledge are not required to take advantage of this new service offering. Items on Electronic Reserves may be accessed from any computer on- or off-campus, and can be easily saved or printed for later reading. For additional details or questions, please contact Gretel Stock-Kupperman at x6054 or gstock@ben.edu.

IM Reference: Instant Messaging (IM) has been added on a pilot basis to the ways in which to contact a Reference Librarian. This service will be available sporadically throughout the day and evening, with no specific schedule. Connect via ICQ at <259826818>, Yahoo at <benulib>, AIM at <BenULib>, and MSN at <libref@ben.edu>. Remember that you can also contact a reference librarian through email (libref@ben.edu) or telephone (630-829-6057).

Wandering Around: The librarians are moving beyond the Reference Desk! Technically, it’s called “Roving Reference”. You may encounter a Reference Librarian on any floor of the library asking if you are finding the information you need and offering solutions. Feel free to ask any questions when you see us.

Take a Book, Leave a Book: Do you have some popular fiction you would prefer to share with others rather than discard? Bring it to the Benedictine Library. In response to requests for leisure reading materials, we are establishing a “book exchange”. We have created an area on the Second Floor by the Map Case (take a right at the Reference Desk) where items can be taken or added to this collection. Questions can be directed to Thillai Rajendran at extension 6050.

Grants: You all heard about last year’s grant for Spanish and Arabic language materials. We have been awarded two additional grants this summer. The first is from the Illinois State Library and is designated for a printer to make access to government documents more efficient. The second grant is part of a collaborative program through the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois. This grant is focused on global business. There are ten participants and each one will receive $2,500 for the purchase of materials in specified areas. The materials purchased by the participants will be available to all through our shared library catalog system.

07/01/2005: Database additions and cancellations

The Benedictine Library is pleased to announce the addition of the following database subscriptions effective July 1:

    • Classical Music Library: a fully searchable database of distinguished classical recordings. It includes tens of thousands of licensed recordings that users can listen to on the Internet. The audio selections are cross-referenced to a database of supplementary reference information. Users browse, search, click, and then listen to the music over the Internet through their headphones. Please note that due to the streaming requirements of this product, it is only accessible from on campus.

    • Communication & Mass Media Complete: first offered as a free trial by its vendor (EBSCOhost) last year, this database proved so popular during its trial period we have now subscribed to it. C&MMC provides the most robust, quality research solution in areas related to communication and mass media. It offers full text for over 200 titles and contains citation coverage for additional sources; bibliographic and keyword references to 26 journals in communication studies, with coverage extending to the inaugural issue of each -- some from as far back as the early decades of the 20th century; and citation coverage of over 40,000 articles related to mass media and published in over 60 research journals, as well as major journalism reviews, recent encyclopedias, and handbooks in the area of communications studies.

    • Wall Street Journal: Full-text articles from the world's leading financial newspaper available online from 1984 onwards. (The library also maintains microfilm of the Wall Street Journal back to 1973 in the Periodicals collection on the 3rd floor).

The following database subscriptions have been discontinued as of July 1, either because of lack of use by our patrons, redundancy with other products to which we subscribe, or because they are no longer available. Suggested alternatives to the discontinued databases are listed below:

02/07/05: 5th floor shifting project completed

Over the course of Winter Break, the library shifted the book collection on the 5th floor to provide more room in key areas for new materials and make browsing through the existing collection easier. 01/17/05: Update on 5th floor shifting project

Over the course of Winter Break, the library has been shifting the book collection on the 5th floor to provide more room in key areas for new materials and make browsing through the existing collection easier.

Here are some general guidelines to finding items in their new locations:

  • All items that were on the 5th floor prior to the shift are still there – nothing has been moved to a new floor.
  • Check the call number labels at the end of each shelf for the item’s new location.
  • If you’re familiar with the old location, look about four shelves forward.
  • If there isn’t a label on the shelf end, that area has been recently shifted. Open the shelves and check the call numbers at the beginning of the shelf.

Most of the work is complete, but library staff is still moving books in the 100 – 320 range. We appreciate your patience while we finish making these improvements.

12/06/04: Creche exhibit on 4th floor of library

Polish Szopka crecheThe Benedictine Library invites all faculty, staff and students to visit an exhibit of crèches from around the world. The crèches on display on the fourth floor of the library are varied and unique. They span 150 years and include an entry from a “szopka” contest in Krakow, Poland, a German Crèche from the 1920s, hand painted terra-cotta crèche figures called “Santons” from the Provence area of France, a Hummel crèche and a Mexican tin angel candelabra. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a porcelain infant “bambino” circa the mid-1800s from Bethlehem, lying in a crèche made by Fr. Vitus Buresh, O.S.B. (1923-1988) of St. Procopius Abbey, who served as technical services librarian at Benedictine University. While interesting as art, these crèches kindle a spirit of the true meaning of the season. More photos from the display are available on the Virtual Library Club site on the Library web page.

11/30/04:
New look, added content on "New Books" web page

Cover images, a brief summary of the contents, and links to the online catalog where users can check the status of items are now also included. 11/22/04: Change to policy regarding lost items

Effective today (November 22), all items that go out on either 4-week or 16-week loan periodes and are overdue by more than thirty days will be considered "lost," and lost-item fines and fees will be assessed accordingly. The previous policy allowed an item to be overdue for 60 days before it was considered lost. This policy is in effect for all Benedictine University patrons and all other patrons eligible to borrow Benedictine University materials. Patrons will be charged $50.00 or the replacement cost for the lost item (whichever is greater), plus a non-refundable $15 processing fee. If a patron returns an item that has been declared lost, the replacement cost is waived but the patron is still responsible for paying the $15 processing charge. Nonpayment of item replacement fees will result in suspension of library accounts and a library hold will be placed on students' University accounts.

Please note documents on the library's Web site regarding this policy are still in the process of being updated and may not yet reflect this change. If you have questions or comments, please contact Gretel Stock-Kupperman, Head of Access Services at (630) 829-6054 or gstock@ben.edu.

The goal of “Little Soles” is to bring about changes of heart in women who may be contemplating an abortion and men who may be encouraging a partner or spouse to have an abortion.
