4/15/07: Benedictine
Library in The Daily Herald
Benedictine library wants ‘friends’ back
By Susan Dibble
Daily Herald Staff Herald
A good science collection, a small collection of children’s
books and the papers of former Congressman John Erlenborn
are a few of the resources available at the Benedictine
University Library.
The library houses more than 126,000 books and provides
access to more than 14,000 periodicals and 90 databases
that are available for area residents to use.
To build on those resources and plan programs the larger
community might want to attend, Jack Fritts, Benedictine’s
director of library services, invites residents to become
Friends of the Library.
A reception to explain what’s involved runs 4 to 5:30
p.m. Wednesday in the library on the second floor of Kindlon
Hall on campus, 5700 College Road, Lisle.
Benedictine President William Carroll and Dan Julius,
provost and vice president for academic affairs, will
speak briefly. The Rev. Michael Komechak, Benedictine’s
art curator, will give a tour of some of the artwork displayed
in and around the library. Light refreshments will be
served.
Friends members will raise funds for materials not covered
by the budget, plan programs and receive invitations to
special events sponsored by the library, Fritts said.
"The time commitment is going to be up to the individual,"
he said. "What I’m really after is people to help us move
forward."
The library already holds book talks that are open to
the general community, but that programming could be expanded
upon, Fritts said. Some Friends groups at other universities
sponsor concerts as well as trips to museums and performances,
he said.
Fritts said he’s wanted to start a Friends groups since
he began his position at the Benedictine library five
years ago. A previous Friends group no longer operates,
he said.
Lisle residents can borrow materials from the Benedictine
library, and the library is open for anyone to use, Fritts
said.
"We have librarians who are friendly and helpful," he
said.
Library hours are 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through
Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday noon to 11 p.m..
Sign-up information can be found at Friends
of the Benedictine Library

A website was unveiled this week recalling the life and

until 1971.
Mr. Erlenborn died on Sunday, October 30, 2005 at his

an Edgar Allan Poe Book Chat on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 from 12:30 - 1:15 p.m. in Scholl Hall 101
Our book:
Midnight Dreary: The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe.
Mystery surrounds the last six days of the life of poet and writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Author John Evangelist Walsh has re-examined documents relating to Poe's death and produces
evidence that Poe's own end may have been a horror only matched in his own stories.
Our Speaker:
Fr. Julian von Duerbeck, O.S.B. of St. Procopius Abbey is an adjunct professor at Benedictine
University. While on sabbatical at Harvard Divinity School, he visited many of the sites
associated with Poe's life in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York. His presentation will
include pictures of the people and places in Poe's life.

will be sent to the "bnumber" email address. All others are encouraged to use ben.edu emails. Please contact
the library circulation desk to see we have an email address on file.

document delivery service for Interlibrary Loan debuts
The Library is pleased to announce patrons will now be

times, or two weeks have passed, whichever comes first.
To retrieve their articles, patrons will need to know
their Library ID number and the email address they used
to request the item (note: undergraduates MUST use their

01/13/2006: ILLINET
Online catalog now I-SHARE catalog
Due to changes in statewide academic consortia, the ILCSO
catalog of 65 academic libraries in Illinios is now called
the I-Share catalog. This change is already in place in
the library's online catalog, website, and most print
documentation. The changes are minor, consisting of a
new logo and color scheme in the catalog of all 65 libraries.
Users can still directly request items from the shared
catalog, find items in libraries near them, and search
for local resources in Benedictine's online catalog. When
searching for materials that the library does not own,
keep your eyes open for the link to I-Share!

for one-week checkout. Click
here to see if copies are available at the Library
or read
more about the book at the publisher's Web site.
Fr. Julian studied ancient Mediterranean culture at
Harvard Divinity School, was the Marshal for the 1993
Parliament of World Religions and, as a Knight of the
Company of the Rose, is a fellow of the International
Chivalric Institute.
08/26/05:
Library debuts
Find it @ BU is
based
on a service called SFX that allows you to
seamlessly link from citations in selected databases
to the full text of the item in another database. If
the full text of the article you want is not available
in the database you're currently searching, look for
a
button (the location of the button will vary with the
database you're searching). Then click on the
button to bring up a menu of links. The links lead to
where the full text of the item is located, or possibly
to other information or services, such as a link to
an interlibrary loan form if the full text of the item
is not available through Benedictine. For more information
about how to use Find it @
BU, please see http://www.ben.edu/library/help/findit.htm.
08/26/05: Cell phone policy
revised
For patron convenience, the Benedictine Library has
established a "Phone Zone" in the West stairwell
(near the elevator) to allow patrons on the upper floors
of the library to make and recieve brief cell phone
calls. We ask that cell phone users keep their voices
down while in the "Phone Zone" as a courtesy
to other patrons. Patrons on the 2nd (main) floor of
the library can either go to the West stairwell or exit
the library if they need to make or receive a call.
08/25/05:
Fall news & announcements (From Jack Fritts,
Director of Library Services)
Weve been busy the past couple of months in the
library. We have done some reclassifying and shifting
of materials; a good deal of cleanup in the catalog
to make things easier to find; and some major rearranging
of our space (with more to come).
Computers Move to Second Floor:
In order to better answer questions and address technical
problems, the six computers and the printer in the common
area of the fifth floor have been moved to the second
floor. The computers in the study rooms on the fifth
floor remain in place for group projects. Study room
computers will print to the second floor. A computer
is now also available on each floor to look up item
locations or answer quick questions. You may view the
change on the Virtual
Library Tour
Electronic Reserves: Instructors
may provide printed or electronic copies of materials
to be placed on reserve or may ask the library to link
to an electronic resource. WebCT or Internet knowledge
are not required to take advantage of this new service
offering. Items on Electronic Reserves may be accessed
from any computer on- or off-campus, and can be easily
saved or printed for later reading. For additional details
or questions, please contact Gretel Stock-Kupperman
at x6054 or gstock@ben.edu.
IM Reference: Instant Messaging
(IM) has been added on a pilot basis to the ways in
which to contact a Reference Librarian. This service
will be available sporadically throughout the day and
evening, with no specific schedule. Connect via ICQ
at <259826818>, Yahoo at <benulib>, AIM
at <BenULib>, and MSN at <libref@ben.edu>.
Remember that you can also contact a reference librarian
through email (libref@ben.edu)
or telephone (630-829-6057).
Wandering Around: The
librarians are moving beyond the Reference Desk! Technically,
its called Roving Reference. You may
encounter a Reference Librarian on any floor of the
library asking if you are finding the information you
need and offering solutions. Feel free to ask any questions
when you see us.
Take a Book, Leave a Book:
Do you have some popular fiction you would prefer to
share with others rather than discard? Bring it to the
Benedictine Library. In response to requests for leisure
reading materials, we are establishing a book
exchange. We have created an area on the Second
Floor by the Map Case (take a right at the Reference
Desk) where items can be taken or added to this collection.
Questions can be directed to Thillai Rajendran at extension
6050.
Grants: You all heard
about last years grant for Spanish and Arabic
language materials. We have been awarded two additional
grants this summer. The first is from the Illinois State
Library and is designated for a printer to make access
to government documents more efficient. The second grant
is part of a collaborative program through the Consortium
of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois. This
grant is focused on global business. There are ten participants
and each one will receive $2,500 for the purchase of
materials in specified areas. The materials purchased
by the participants will be available to all through
our shared library catalog system.

02/10/05: Some
library databases unavailable due to campus network maintenance
At 11 p.m. on Feb. 10, the University's IT Department will
be performing maintenance on the network firewall and servers.
Maintenance is expected to last several hours. During this
time, access to the library's Web site and most of the library's
databases will be interrupted. The Illinet Online catalog
will be available, as are those databases on the Emergency
Access to Databases list that have an access
method other than through EZproxy. If you need access to
databases while the network is down, print out or save the
Emergency Access list. You can then use non-EZproxy URLs
to access some databases.
02/07/05: 5th
floor shifting project completed
Over the course of Winter Break, the library shifted the
book collection on the 5th floor to provide more room in
key areas for new materials and make browsing through the
existing collection easier. The shift is now completed thanks
to several hours of dedicated staff and student worker time.
Thank you to those who participated in the shift, and thank
you to library patrons for your patience and understanding
during shifting.
01/17/05 (updated 02/03/05):
Presidential autographs & campaign
button collection on display
The Benedictine University Library is commemorating Presidents'
Day with a display of presidential autographs from the University
Archives Collection and a collection of presidential campaign
buttons generously loaded to us by Reference Librarian,
Fran Gilles. . You may view autographed portrait of Presidents
Grant, Hoover, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan and campaign buttons
dating back to the 1916 presidential election in the display
case on the fourth floor of the library in Kindlon Hall.

the Virtual
Library Club Web site. If you have additional
presidential items to contribute to the display, please
contact Joan
Hopkins at ext. 6052.
01/17/05: Update
on 5th floor shifting project
Over the course of Winter Break, the library has been shifting
the book collection on the 5th floor to provide more room
in key areas for new materials and make browsing through
the existing collection easier.
Here are some general guidelines to finding items in their
new locations:
- All items that were on the 5th floor prior to the shift
are still there nothing has been moved to a new
floor.
- Check the call number labels at the end of each shelf
for the items new location.
- If youre familiar with the old location, look
about four shelves forward.
- If there isnt a label on the shelf end, that area
has been recently shifted. Open the shelves and check
the call numbers at the beginning of the shelf.
Most of the work is complete, but library staff is still
moving books in the 100 320 range. We appreciate
your patience while we finish making these improvements.
12/13/04: "Virtual
Library Club" Web site wins award
Benedictine
University Library's Virtual
Library Club Web site has been selected as the
2004 "Public Access Super Star" for Innovative
Content and Use of Technology in its service level by WebJunction.
The site is largely developed and maintained by Joan Hopkins,
with contributions from other library staff. WebJunction,
an offshoot of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grants
to libraries, is an online community of libraries and other
agencies sharing knowledge and experience to provide the
broadest public access to information technology. More information
on the award will be forthcoming on the WebJunction home
page, in their Crossroads newsletter, and in the Awards
section (under Community Center) at http://WebJunction.org.
12/06/04: Creche
exhibit on 4th floor of library
The
Benedictine Library invites all faculty, staff and students
to visit an exhibit of crèches from around the world.
The crèches on display on the fourth floor of the
library are varied and unique. They span 150 years and include
an entry from a szopka contest in Krakow, Poland,
a German Crèche from the 1920s, hand painted terra-cotta
crèche figures called Santons from the
Provence area of France, a Hummel crèche and a Mexican
tin angel candelabra. The centerpiece of the exhibit is
a porcelain infant bambino circa the mid-1800s
from Bethlehem, lying in a crèche made by Fr. Vitus
Buresh, O.S.B. (1923-1988) of St. Procopius Abbey, who served
as technical services librarian at Benedictine University.
While interesting as art, these crèches kindle a
spirit of the true meaning of the season. More photos from
the display are available on the Virtual
Library Club site on the Library web page.
11/30/04: New
look, added content on "New Books" web page
The "New Books" list on the library's Web site
has been expanded. Previously the list only included a link
to a list of new titles in the circulating collection. The
list now includes new reference books, new videos, new online
databases, and new government documents. Cover images, a
brief summary of the contents, and links to the online catalog
where users can check the status of items are now also included.
To view the latest list, click on the "New Books, Videos
& Government Documents" link at the top of this
page or at the bottom of the "Quick Links" section
on the library home page.
11/22/04: Change to policy
regarding lost items
Effective today (November 22), all items that go out on
either 4-week or 16-week loan periodes and are overdue by
more than thirty days will be considered "lost,"
and lost-item fines and fees will be assessed accordingly.
The previous policy allowed an item to be overdue for 60
days before it was considered lost. This policy is in effect
for all Benedictine University patrons and all other patrons
eligible to borrow Benedictine University materials. Patrons
will be charged $50.00 or the replacement cost for the lost
item (whichever is greater), plus a non-refundable $15 processing
fee. If a patron returns an item that has been declared
lost, the replacement cost is waived but the patron is still
responsible for paying the $15 processing charge. Nonpayment
of item replacement fees will result in suspension of library
accounts and a library hold will be placed on students'
University accounts.
Please note documents on the library's Web site regarding
this policy are still in the process of being updated and
may not yet reflect this change. If you have questions or
comments, please contact Gretel Stock-Kupperman, Head of
Access Services at (630) 829-6054 or gstock@ben.edu.
11/15/04: Library
hosts "Little Soles" exhibit
University Ministrys Little Soles exhibit
will be hosted in the library's 4th floor display case from
November 13 until December 3. Inspired by the display of
childrens shoes at the Holocaust Memorial in Auschwitz,
the display features thousands of baby shoes that represent
the reality of loss of life from abortion each day in the
United States. The goal of Little Soles is to
bring about changes of heart in women who may be contemplating
an abortion and men who may be encouraging a partner or
spouse to have an abortion.
11/01/04: BenU
students may now check out C.O.D. library materials
As of October 26, Benedictine University students, faculty
and staff are able to check out books and selected other
materials from the College of DuPage's library. A current
Benedictine University I.D. card is required to be presented
at the C.O.D. library in order to check out materials. In
addition, students must bring proof of their current registration
(such as a printout of their current schedule from BenULive).
For more details, please see Reciprocal
Borrowing Agreement with College of DuPage on
the Policies
Web page.
11/01/04: Library
receives grant to expand foreign language collections
The Benedictine Library recently received a $4,000 grant
to expand its collection of Spanish and Arabic language
materials. The grant was made possible through the Library
Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and is one of 330 awarded
this year, totaling more than $3.9 million. Weed and
Feed grants, like that made to Benedictine, are designed
to allow libraries to enhance their circulating non-fiction
collections and purchase new material. The grant will be
used to support and enhance resources for new and existing
academic programs at the University, as well as to address
