Task Force on Mission, Vision and Character Statements seeks input

How well do Benedictine University's "identity documents" articulate its Catholic and Benedictine character? The Task Force on Mission, Vision and Character Statements is seeking input from community members and will welcome input during two upcoming forums. The first is scheduled for 1:00-2:00 p.m. and the second from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, in Goodwin Hall, Room 411. Each session will begin with a presentation by members of the task force. Encourage your students to "Have Mercy" during spring break

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to participate in "Have Mercy," a spring break service immersion experience at Misercordia Home on the north side of Chicago on Monday-Wednesday, March 21-23, serving and supporting people with developmental disabilities. The cost is $30, which includes all meals, transportation and a donation to Misericordia on behalf of Benedictine University to honor their time, talent and treasure in welcoming us to their home. We will serve as a community to the community of Misericordia. At the end of each day, we will return to Benedictine for dinner, reflection and group activities. Students are asked to apply at ben.edu/springbreakservice or pick up an application in Kindlon Hall, Room 415. Applications are due Friday, February 12, and $30 to cover the cost of the experience and donation to Misericordia is due Friday, March 4. All applicants must register for an interview. Become a Prayer Companion to a service immersion participant

Recognizing that not everyone is able to travel on a Service Immersion Experience, Campus Ministry is partnering each service immersion participant with a Prayer Companion. Campus Ministry is seeking 51 prayer companions, so that the students participating in the Spring Break Service Immersion Experience to Misericordia in Chicago and the Bolivia Service Immersion Experience in June each have at least one prayer companion. The Prayer Companion Role involves praying for the students while they are on the Service Immersion Experience, sending them a message of support and encouragement, attending the last group of meeting prior to the trip and attending the Sunday evening send-off Mass with the students. Donate your unused personal or vacation time to someone in need

Do you have vacation, personal or floating holiday time that you do not plan to use this year? If so, please consider donating some time to this year's Vacation Donation program. Only vacation, personal and floating holiday time can be donated. Time that is donated and not used by the end of the current fiscal year will not be rolled over to the next fiscal year. If you are interested in donating your unused time to a fellow employee who may need the additional time to take care of a sick family member or other reason, please contact Jill Poskin at (630) 829-6366 or jposkin@ben.edu

Denim Days return in time for cold weather

Denim Days are back, and just in time for the winter. Donate $5 per Friday to the BenU Fund or the Fr. Kevin Sheeran, O.S.B., Text Book Fund and be able to wear jeans to work on Fridays through April 1. If you don't wear jeans, you can still give. Consider donating $5 on behalf of a co-worker who then could wear jeans. This is a new donation. Current payroll deductions do not apply, but you may increase your payroll deduction accordingly to qualify. Denim Days is valid for Fridays only through April 1. Model UN event explores the fight to end slavery

Benedictine University's Model United Nations program will present "Slavery in Mauritania: The Fight to End It, and the Role of the United Nations" at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, in Goodwin Hall, Room 321. CNN has deemed Mauritania, in West Africa, to be slavery's last stronghold with more than 340,000 people, or about 10 percent of the population, enslaved.  The event will feature guest speakers Bakary Tandia and Sean Tenner, co-founders of The Abolition Institute. What connects today's Palestinians and yesterday's African-Americans?

The Global Studies major, Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies and the College of Liberal Arts will present "Shared Solidarity:  Palestinians and African-Americans in the 1960s and Today," by 1997 Benedictine University graduate Maha Nassar, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 4. Nassar will discuss the connection between these two groups, analyzing how Arab intellectuals in the 1960s related to African-American struggles for freedom during the civil rights movement. Nassar earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature at Benedictine University, and a Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies and a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago.

Architect of "The Greatest Sports-Business Turnaround Ever" to speak at Benedictine

The Office of University Development is sponsoring an evening with Blackhawks President and CEO John F. McDonough at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24, in the Goodwin Hall Auditorium. McDonough joined the Blackhawks in 2007 as president and was named president and CEO in 2011. Under his guidance, in what Forbes magazine has called "The Greatest Sports-Business Turnaround Ever," the Blackhawks have revitalized the team's profile and re-energized their fan base. Since McDonough joined the Blackhawks, the team has won Stanley Cup titles in 2010, 2013 and 2015, becoming the first organization in the NHL's salary cap era to capture three championships. Build a new world during Black History Month

Benedictine University, in conjunction with Roosevelt University, will honor Black History Month with the conference, "Come Let Us Build A New World Together: Fifty Years after the Mississippi Summer Project," featuring a series of presentations and lectures from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, February 25-27. The event is designed to connect the past with the current wave of youth activism arising from the socio-economic crises of endangered communities. It will focus on the fight for voting rights and the role of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, lessons from the Mississippi Summer Project, voter registration organizing, Freedom Schools, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, ramifications of the civil rights movement and connections with contemporary struggles around education and violence in and against endangered communities. The February 25 event on the campus of Benedictine is designed primarily for teachers, social workers and health professionals working with African-American populations. The cost is $20. The conference will continue on Feb. 26-27 at Roosevelt University, 430 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, and will consist of interactive panels, discussion circles and films designed for high school and college students, community organizations, church groups, academics and social justice advocates. Founders' Day will celebrate 129 years of Benedictine history

Faculty and staff are invited to enjoy the annual celebration of Benedictine University's history and heritage on Founders' Day. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 4, on the second floor of the Krasa Center. The event will include the presentation of the Kevin Doyle Award and the Value of Commitment to Academic Excellence Award. Hors d'oeuvres, refreshments and desserts will be served.

The bus is the only way to fly (to the train station)

Pace is providing bus service between the Lisle Metra Station and Benedictine University with one southbound trip departing the train station at 7:16 a.m. (dropping off riders at College Road near the campus's main entrance) and one northbound trip departing the campus near the main entrance on College Road at 4:52 p.m. Pace Route 827 (Green Trails-Steeple Run) will provide this service as a pilot program for one year. Resolve to keep that resolution

Do you have a food or nutrition-related goal you are trying to turn into a habit during the new year?  Perhaps it is cutting back on something, like processed foods, or perhaps it is to incorporate more of something into your diet, like fruits and vegetables. One thing to understand is that bad habits will not change unless your goals are realistic. Here are some tips for setting goals, and remember, it can sometimes take a whole 21 days (three weeks) to break a habit.

SMART goals:

  • Specific: Written clearly; the what, why and how of the goal.
  • Measurable: So that you have tangible evidence to prove you accomplished it.
  • Achievable: Slightly enough that you feel challenged, but you must possess the appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities to achieve the goal.
  • Results-focused: Goals should measure outcomes, not activities>
  • Timely: Linked to a timeframe that creates a practical sense of urgency.

The Benedictine men's basketball team is now 18-0 after beating Milwaukee School of Engineering.

The Benedictine women's basketball team suffered a third consecutive loss.

The Benedictine men's volleyball team opened the home portion of the schedule with a split.

The Benedictine women's indoor track and field team set five school records at Olivet Nazarene.

The Benedictine men's indoor track and field team placed six in the finals of the 60 meter dash at the NAIA/NCAA Challenge.

Visiting scholar lecture series explores young adults and healthy relationships

Kari-Shane Davis Zimmerman, Ph.D., associate professor of Theology at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn., will present "SOS: Social, Online and Sexual. Young Adults and the Practice of Healthy Personal Relationships" from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, in Blue Angels Hall at Bourgade Catholic High School, located at 4602 N. 31st Ave., in Phoenix. A 2007 graduate of Marquette University with a doctorate in Theological Ethics, Davis Zimmerman specializes in the areas of Catholic moral theology and Christian ethics. Her recent work examines the influence of a "hookup culture" on college students' views and formation of intimate relationships. Teachers, lay ministers and deacons who attend this lecture are eligible for 1 credit toward recertification in the Diocese of Phoenix. The event is free and open to the public.The lecture is sponsored by Bourgade Catholic High School, and Benedictine's Center for Mission and Identity (CMI) and Department of Theology.
