In Memoriam

Most Rev. Daniel W. Kucera, O.S.B.
The Most Rev. Daniel W. Kucera, O.S.B., the Archbishop Emeritus of Dubuque, Iowa, died on Tuesday, May 30. He was 94. Archbishop Daniel is survived by his monastic community, and by two brothers, Fr. Edward, O.S.B., at St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle, and Henry.

An alumnus of St. Procopius College, Archbishop Daniel was the 10th Bishop and the eighth Archbishop of Dubuque and the fifth Abbot of St. Procopius Abbey. He served as president of St. Procopius College from 1959-65 and 1971-76, and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet from 1977-80. He was currently Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Memorials may be made to the Archbishop Kucera Educational Development Fund in care of the Archdiocese.

James Pelech, Ph.D., (College of Education and Health Services) attended and co-presented at the Lilly Conference in Bethesda, Md., from June 1-4. The conference theme, “Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning,” brought together university instructors from across the country. Pelech’s topic, “Motivating Students to Want What You Want Them to Learn,” focused on the implementation of learner-centered activities in the classroom.

Spend “Tuesday Night with the Sisters” 

The Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery invite you to learn how to tie the new Beatitudes to “The Rule of St. Benedict” from a mix of speakers and films beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, in the Chapter Room of the Monastery. Sr. Mary Bratrsovsky, O.S.B., will present the Benedictine core value, the love of Christ and neighbor, and one of the new Beatitudes, “Blessed are those who see God in every person and strive to make others also discover him.” The Monastery is located at 1910 Maple Ave., Lisle.

Summer Visit Day gives prospective students the 411 on BenU admissions

Prospective undergraduate students can get a jump start on the admissions process by attending Summer Visit Day from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19. The event includes a barbecue lunch from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with the Financial Aid, Student Life and Admissions staff, followed by an admissions presentation from 12:00-12:30 p.m. and a tour of campus from 12:30-1:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule a personalized visit, contact the Office of Admissions at (630) 829-6300 or admissions@ben.edu.
