University Notes

The Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) at Benedictine Universitywill hold its Eighth Annual Youth Government Day from 8:45 a.m.-2:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 in the Dan and Ada Rice Center. Approximately 400 area high school students are expected to participate in this year’s event, which will focus on political corruption and fiscal mismanagement in Illinois, and feature presentations from a variety of academics, citizen advocates and investigative journalists.

BenU UNICEF invites the public to attend a hunger banquet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8 in Krasa Center, Rooms A, B and C. Proceeds from the event will go to UNICEF to aid the Sahel region of northern Africa. Early bird registration ends on March 15 and is $25 per person and $20 per child aged 12 and under. Phillip Phillips is going to make Benedictine University his “home” on April 13! Get your tickets now - only $30 for general admission seats - by going to www.ben.edu/benbash or visiting the Office of University Events in the Krasa Center, Room 055. Only Benedictine University students can purchase a $15 student ticket. All graduating seniors will receive one free ticket. The Benedictine University Alumni Association would like to welcome all graduating seniors into the Alumni Association. Volunteers are needed to help the Office of University Events during the concert. The Women’s Institute for Global Leadership presents the “2013 Women’s History Month Personal Enrichment Series.” The series features workshops on leadership, career advancement, health and financial stability. Mark Gomez, M.D., Chad Earl and Larry Love will provide a session on health, nutrition and fitness with “How to Make Health Work for the Busy Professional” from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Mickeisha Armstrong will discuss “Career Advancement: Retool and Re-invent” from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22. Janice Faris will discuss financial decision making with “‘My Worth’ ... Planning for a Life You Can Depend On” from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27. Each session is free, and will be held at the Moser Center, 1832 Centre Point Circle, Room 106. St. Procopius Abbey and Benedictine University invite you to “Lent at the Abbey” from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at St. Procopius Abbey, 5601 College Rd., Lisle, IL. Open Mic and Poetry Slam Spring 2013 will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at the Coal Ben. The poetry slam will have two rounds, so bring at least two original poems if you want to participate in the contest. There will be music and refreshments. Winners will receive prizes. Publicity announcements of general interest to faculty, staff and/or the student body of the University by academic units, University departments and/or student organizations are the only type of material(s) allowed to be posted on University property. Outside agencies must advertise via the Candor. Community announcements can be posted on the community board located in the lower level stairwell of Krasa Student Center. Career Development will distribute job opportunity announcements. All announcements must meet the educational goals and promote the mission of the University. Before posting a publicity announcement, please refer to the University’s policy located here: S:\University Info\Policies and Procedures\Posting Publicity Announcements Policy.docx. Any announcements found in violation of this policy will be removed and discarded.

The Scholars Program will host two sessions for senior presentations. The day session will be from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in the Krasa Center Presentation Room; the night sessions will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4. Topics vary widely and include - but are not limited to - germs, music, the media, genomics, medicine, literature and the concept of happiness. No matter where your interests lie, you won’t want to miss it!

The Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum is pleased to announce its inaugural Poetry Contest! Poems must feature a specimen in the museum. Three categories will be judged: haiku, limerick and free verse. The contest is open to the entire campus community. All entries must be submitted to Monica Tischler at mtischler@ben.edu no later than Friday, March 8. Prizes will be awarded in all categories. Please join us for poetry night at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, in the Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum in the Birck Hall of Science where we will share our poetry and announce the winners of the contest.

Money Smart Week (MSW) is a public awareness campaign aimed at helping individuals better manage their finances. Student Activities, the College of Business and the Undergraduate Business Programs will sponsor two events to help you get in the MSW spirit. “Navigating Personal Finances in Today’s Environment” will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 in the Krasa Student Center, Rooms A and B, and will feature five speakers with expertise in the area of personal finance. The “Big Money” presentation - featuring T-shirts, cash prizes and the money machine - will take place from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 in the Krasa Presentation Room. The purpose of this event is to promote wise money management for students.

“Lunch With Landscapers” will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18 on the second floor of the Krasa Student Center. Learn to save money by growing your own vegetables and plants from seeds! Join special guest Andrew Nordstrom, an account executive with Shemin Nurseries and former owner of South View Horticulture. Space is limited and you must RSVP by Wednesday, March 13 to Kathy Rutkowski at krutkowski@ben.edu or (630) 829-6420. You will receive a ticket at check-in for entrance into the event.

The Office of International Programs and Services is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Chinese Government Scholarship. This partial scholarship covers tuition, on-campus accommodations and basic medical insurance for eligible Benedictine students to study at one of the major universities recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Seven Benedictine students have been awarded this scholarship during the past three years. The program is administered by the China Scholarship Council under the Ministry of Education in China. The deadline for application is March 1. Interviews will be conducted the week of March 4-8. Parent Programs offers a one-stop service for parents of Benedictine University students. The program responds to parent inquiries and provides information on a variety of issues to facilitate communication between parents and the University. The sixth annual Faith and Reason Symposium, “...To the Least of These My Brethren: How Faith and Science can Fight Hunger, from the Local to the Global,” will be held from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12 in the Krasa Center Presentation Room. The event is sponsored by the Center for Civic Leadership’s Hunger Team, the Abby Endowment, the Center for Mission and Identity and the Global Studies Forum. Guest speakers and panelists include Diane Nilan, founder and executive director of HEAR US, an organization dedicated to ending child poverty in the United States, and Kim Perez, executive director of People’s Resource Center of DuPage County.

The 23rd Annual Health Professions Fair will be held from 9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 on the first floor of the Birck Hall of Science. The primary goal of this fair is to allow students to meet admissions representatives and counselors from professional schools and military services. The fair is appropriate for students who are interested in medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, veterinary science and allied health.

Do you have vacation, personal or floating holiday time that you are not going to use? Donate it! Donated time will be available for Benedictine community members who may require additional time off for medical reasons, to care for a loved one, to cope with the passing of a family member or to handle personal emergencies. By donating your time, you are truly exemplifying the Benedictine spirit of caring for others and giving back. You can make a difference by donating your unused time to those who really need it. Time off is available for staff to use through the Vacation Donation Program if they are facing a personal emergency and have used all of their own vacation, personal and floating holiday hours. Denim Days are back! Perfect timing for the cold weather! Donate to the General Scholarship Fund and have the opportunity to wear jeans to work on Fridays from March 8-22. Donate $5 per Friday. If you don’t wear jeans, you can still donate. You may donate $5 on behalf of a co-worker who then could wear jeans. Please consider donating, and we thank all who participate.

Denim Days Guidelines. This is a new donation. Current payroll deductions do not apply, but you may increase your payroll deduction accordingly to qualify. Denim Days is valid for Fridays only from March 8-22. Prior to wearing jeans, please contact Jill Poskin or Josh Wolfgang with the Office of the Annual Fund, located in the lower level of Lownik Hall, Rooms 019 or 056, to obtain the required form to submit along with your donation. You will receive a dated sticker corresponding with the eligible Fridays. We ask that you wear that sticker on the Fridays you wear jeans. Participants are responsible for securing supervisor approval before participating.

Put on your running shoes and join us for the American Medical Student Association 5K Fun Run at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 7. The proceeds from this race benefit HomeCare Physicians (HCP), a nationally recognized, award-winning medical house call program for homebound patients. Vincent Gaddis (History) has been awarded a grant to participate in the seminar “Vietnam: Consensus, Conflict, Contradiction and Change” as part of the AsiaNetwork Faculty Enhancement Program, “Deepening Asian Studies in the Liberal Arts,” at the 21st Annual AsiaNetwork Conference in Nashville on Friday, April 12, and is among eight faculty nationwide to be selected to attend an international training seminar this summer in Vietnam. The AsiaNetwork is a consortium of about 160 North American colleges that strives to strengthen the role of Asian Studies within the framework of liberal arts education to help prepare succeeding generations of undergraduates for a world in which Asian societies play prominent roles in an ever more interdependent world.

March is National Nutrition Month. The 2013 theme, “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day,” encourages personalized healthy eating styles and recognizes that food preferences, lifestyle, cultural and ethnic traditions and health concerns all impact individual food choices. This is the month to be more conscious of what you are eating and hopefully you can put those practices into your everyday lifestyle. Happy National Nutrition Month!
