The Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) at Benedictine Universitywill hold its Eighth Annual Youth Government Day from 8:45 a.m.-2:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 in the Dan and Ada Rice Center. Approximately 400 area high school students are expected to participate in this year’s event, which will focus on political corruption and fiscal mismanagement in Illinois, and feature presentations from a variety of academics, citizen advocates and investigative journalists.
BenU UNICEF invites the public to attend a hunger banquet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8 in Krasa Center, Rooms A, B and C. Proceeds from the event will go to UNICEF to aid the Sahel region of northern Africa. Early bird registration ends on March 15 and is $25 per person and $20 per child aged 12 and under. The Women’s Institute for Global Leadership presents the “2013 Women’s History Month Personal Enrichment Series.” The series features workshops on leadership, career advancement, health and financial stability. Outside agencies must advertise via the Candor. Community announcements can be posted on the community board located in the lower level stairwell of Krasa Student Center. Career Development will distribute job opportunity announcements. All announcements must meet the educational goals and promote the mission of the University. The Scholars Program will host two sessions for senior presentations. The day session will be from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in the Krasa Center Presentation Room; the night sessions will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4. Topics vary widely and include - but are not limited to - germs, music, the media, genomics, medicine, literature and the concept of happiness. No matter where your interests lie, you won’t want to miss it!
The Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum is pleased to announce its inaugural Poetry Contest! Poems must feature a specimen in the museum. Three categories will be judged: haiku, limerick and free verse. Money Smart Week (MSW) is a public awareness campaign aimed at helping individuals better manage their finances. Student Activities, the College of Business and the Undergraduate Business Programs will sponsor two events to help you get in the MSW spirit. “Navigating Personal Finances in Today’s Environment” will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 in the Krasa Student Center, Rooms A and B, and will feature five speakers with expertise in the area of personal finance. The “Big Money” presentation - featuring T-shirts, cash prizes and the money machine - will take place from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 in the Krasa Presentation Room. The purpose of this event is to promote wise money management for students.
“Lunch With Landscapers” will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18 on the second floor of the Krasa Student Center. Learn to save money by growing your own vegetables and plants from seeds! Join special guest Andrew Nordstrom, an account executive with Shemin Nurseries and former owner of South View Horticulture. The Office of International Programs and Services is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Chinese Government Scholarship. This partial scholarship covers tuition, on-campus accommodations and basic medical insurance for eligible Benedictine students to study at one of the major universities recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Seven Benedictine students have been awarded this scholarship during the past three years. The program is administered by the China Scholarship Council under the Ministry of Education in China. The deadline for application is March 1. Interviews will be conducted the week of March 4-8. The sixth annual Faith and Reason Symposium, “...To the Least of These My Brethren: How Faith and Science can Fight Hunger, from the Local to the Global,” will be held from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12 in the Krasa Center Presentation Room. The event is sponsored by the Center for Civic Leadership’s Hunger Team, the Abby Endowment, the Center for Mission and Identity and the Global Studies Forum. Guest speakers and panelists include Diane Nilan, founder and executive director of HEAR US, an organization dedicated to ending child poverty in the United States, and Kim Perez, executive director of People’s Resource Center of DuPage County.
The 23rd Annual Health Professions Fair will be held from 9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 on the first floor of the Birck Hall of Science. The primary goal of this fair is to allow students to meet admissions representatives and counselors from professional schools and military services. The fair is appropriate for students who are interested in medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, veterinary science and allied health.
