Big changes coming in summer school

Summer school is back in earnest, and to better serve students and the local community, Benedictine University has enhanced its traditional undergraduate summer courses by piloting more than 20 new offerings in an either partly or fully online format at a 50 percent reduced tuition rate. Health alert!

Several asthmatics have reported breathing difficulties and visited Student Health Services in recent weeks. The cause? Residual irritants from smoking in doorways, vestibules and foyers. Please be considerate of others and do not smoke in these areas. The Smoke Free Illinois Act prohibits smoking within 15 feet of any building doors, windows or HVAC intake.

Fair presents options for students seeking health career

University’s 24th Annual Health Professions Fair collaboratively sponsored by the Pre-Med American Medical Students Association, Pre-Dental Club, Tri-Beta Club, OT/PT Club and American Chemical Society/American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology under the direction of Alice Sima and the Department of Pre-Professional Health Programs will be held from 9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 in first floor hallway of the Birck Hall of Science. BenU police host seminar on sexual assault

The Benedictine University Police will host a Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention seminar from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 in the Krasa Presentation Room. The presenter will be Karli Johnson, a prevention educator at the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago office. Sexual assault and acquaintance rape awareness are topics that are seldom discussed openly. The program by Johnson has been very well received in the region, and the Benedictine Police believe it’s time to openly discuss this issue to educate the campus community. Get in step with Benedictine's artist-in-residence

Chicago choreographer Emily Stein is Benedictine’s artist-in-residence during the spring semester. Her residency will include an eight-week course titled “Dance: Body, Space, Time” and a performance of her choreography “Corps/Corpus” on the fifth floor of Kindlon Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12. The course “Dance: Body, Space, Time” will look deeply at the art of choreography. Through dance experiences, choreographic exercises, watching, reading and talking about dance, students will explore themes such as space, structure, time and virtuosity to investigate different ways of ‘reading’ dance, choreography and the body in motion, questioning common assumptions about its history and meanings. The performance of Stein’s choreography at Benedictine University will feature a new work-in-progress titled “Corps/Corpus” for five dancers. Inspired by the residency to read the Rule of Benedict, Ms. Stein began to create a dance that explores the idea of “community as body.” The performance will also include excerpts from her evening-length show, “Secret Experiments in Ballet No. 2,” which premiered in May 2013. The dances will be performed on the fifth floor of Kindlon Hall, both inside and outside the Fr. Michael E. Komechak, O.S.B. Art Gallery.

Liberal Arts grads talk about their career journey

The Office of Career Development and the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies are co-sponsoring the “Liberal Arts Advantage: Career Exploration Series” from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 in the Krasa Center, Rooms A and B. This is the first program of the series that will feature recent alumni who majored in Philosophy, History or Social Science. Students will hear from alumni who will talk about how their career paths evolved and how their liberal arts degree prepared them for the workforce. Small group discussions will follow a panel presentation. All students are welcome, but those who are considering a liberal arts major or working toward a liberal arts degree are especially encouraged to attend. Pizza and refreshments will be served. Learn how to be smart with your finances at Money Smart Week

Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign aimed at helping individuals better manage their finances. Student Activities, the College of Business and the Undergraduate Business Programs will sponsor two events to help you get in the spirit. The “Big Money” presentation featuring T-shirts, cash prizes and the money machine will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 in the Krasa Presentation Room. “Navigating Personal Finances in Today’s Environment” will feature three speakers with expertise in the area of personal finance from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 in the Krasa Presentation Room. Film chronicles the lives of Catholic sisters in America

As part of National Catholic Sisters Week, the Benedictine Sisters will be showing the film, “Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America,” produced by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. The film chronicles the lives of women who have endured periods of struggle and controversy while establishing schools, hospitals and colleges and providing other social services that have served millions from the time of their arrival in the United States 300 years ago through today. Throw your recyclables away during Sustainable Saturday

The Village of Lisle, DuPage County, School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE), Creative Recycling Systems (CRS) and Benedictine University encourage area residents to bring their electronics and other waste items to “Sustainable Saturday in Lisle” from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 in the Rice Center parking lot. Items accepted include: computers and monitors, televisions; cell phones; bicycles; rechargeable batteries; sealed lead acid batteries; inkjet cartridges; worn American flags; eyeglasses; hearing aids; wheelchairs; records; musical instruments; old keys; printers and copy/fax machines; telephones; VCRs; and stereos and video games. Also acceptable are; scrap metal, including washers, dryers, stoves, swing sets, pots, pans, lawn furniture, garden tools, tomato cages and tools; propane and oxygen tanks; sewing machines; non-motorized wheelchairs; car, sump pump and boat batteries; and clothing, shoes, furniture and hard goods. Students present scholarly projects at symposium

Benedictine’s annual Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Arts (URSA) symposium, established to encourage Benedictine’s students to pursue undergraduate research by providing them with a more formal venue in which to present their scholarship and other significant academic projects, will be held from 12:00-5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 in the Krasa Center, Rooms ABC. Students may present their work either in the form of an oral presentation or as part of a poster session.  All presentations and poster sessions are open to the campus community. The Department of Languages and Literature is sponsoring an Open Mic and Poetry Slam from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 in the Coal Ben. The poetry slam will have two rounds, so participants should bring at least two original poems to participate in the contest. Winners will receive prizes. There will be music and refreshments. Symposium explores how violence impacts all in 'Love Thy Neighbor'

“Love Thy Neighbor: How Faith and Reason Work Against Structural Violence” will be the topic of the next Faith and Reason Symposium from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4 in the Krasa Presentation Room. The purpose of this year’s symposium is to discuss the issue of violence and how violence impacts us from the personal to the global. The featured speaker is Tobias Winright, Ph.D., associate professor of Theological Ethics at Saint Louis University. Panelists will include Jack Thornburg, Cheryl Heinz, Patrick Polisek, Christine Fletcher, Joel Ostrow, Fannie Rushing and Patricia Somers.

Do good here, there, everywhere on National Service Day

The first Benedictine University National Day of Service will be held from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. The purpose of this day is to bring together the Benedictine community across the nation – including on-campus and online students, faculty, staff and alumni – to serve those in need. All campuses and distance learning students are invited to participate in the National Day of Service at designated service sites across the country. Participating cities include Mesa, Atlanta, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Brooklyn, Cincinnati, Geneva, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Springfield, Woodridge, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Retreat offers time for reflection, community

The Spring 2014 Koinonia Retreat will be held Friday-Sunday, April 11-13, at the Darien Carmelite Spiritual Center. Koinonia is the Greek word for “community,” which was an integral part of the faith life of the early Church. The Koinonia retreat weekend is an experience in Christian community based on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ – his life, death and resurrection – designed principally for college students (undergraduate or graduate). Students from Benedictine University (including the Springfield campus), College of DuPage and North Central College are invited to attend. The retreat is offered from a Catholic perspective. Hot dogs, burgers and...warm weather?

Benedictine University Police and Student Health Services will host the annual Finals Cookout from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Due to construction of the College of Business building, the location for the cookout is yet to be determined. Students are invited to come for a hotdog or hamburger, chips and drink after a hard morning of studying for finals.

Catholic women invited to learn whether God is calling

Sacred Heart Monastery in Lisle is offering a monthly discernment program for single women who are practicing Catholics. The next program is Thursday, March 20. The program is designed to help women discover God’s call for them in this life. We believe that there is richness in religious life that needs further exposure. Single Catholic women are invited to join us and pray about this possibility, discover the privileges and responsibilities of this type of vocation, or just learn about this way of life. The program would also suit those who are making decisions about their career or serving as a missionary or volunteer. The program will be held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month for five months. Each meeting will include a prayer form called Lectio Divina, presentations on the topic of discernment, speakers representing different ways of life, discussion with others, light snacks and a closing prayer. Who do you call in a medical emergency? All calls for medical assistance should be directed to University Police at (630) 829-6666 or ext. 6666 from any in-house telephone. If the situation is life-threatening, immediately dial 911. There is no need to pre-dial “8” for 911 or 6666. To expedite the response for any emergency, whether medical or psychological, do not attempt to contact Student Health Services. Their availability is not assured. University Police will respond, assess the situation and take appropriate measures.

Sunday Mass is now being said at 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the St. Benedict Chapel on the fourth floor of Kindlon Hall, and at 11:00 a.m. at St. Procopius Abbey. Daily workshops offered at Office of Career Development

All Benedictine University students and alumni are invited to take part in new programs and services this semester presented by the Office of Career Development located on the lower level of the Krasa Student Center in Room 012. The Career Development Technology Center now offers daily workshops from 12:30-1:20 p.m., Monday through Thursday, on resume writing and other topics. If you can’t make it to a workshop over the lunch hour, drop in during our walk-in hours – 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Monday-Tuesday and 2:30-4:30 p.m., Wednesday-Thursday – for a resume or cover letter consultation. No appointment is necessary during the walk-in periods. Lisle Convention & Visitors Bureau

Don’t know what to do with your old, used flag?

The Lisle Convention & Visitors Bureau is now a central location for the retirement of American flags. Citizens who have old flags which have become worn beyond repair may retire their flag properly by donating it to the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, May 26 in downtown Lisle. A collection box will be located in the Lisle Village Hall lobby, 925 Burlington Ave., from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Donations will be accepted through Friday, May 23. Healthy Table 

Happy Registered Dietitians Day!

Wednesday, March 12 is Registered Dietitians Day. Registered Dietitians can be found in hospitals, doctor’s offices, private practice, working in the community, and in many other arenas; they have been extensively trained in the science behind nutrition and health. All registered dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians, so beware. Healthy Table at Benedictine is managed by interns who are studying to become registered dietitians.

Healthy Table offers free nutrition information, education, counseling, screening and more. Healthy Table is available for individual sessions, group presentations, health fairs and other health-related activities. We are located in Birck Hall, Room 230. The Benedictine men’s lacrosse team held off a fourth quarter surge from Olivet to post a 12-10 win on Saturday.

The Benedictine women’s lacrosse team opened the season at home against Kalamazoo.

The Benedictine University baseball team had their opening weekend in St. Louis cancelled.

Two individuals participated for the Benedictine indoor women’s track and field team at the Carthage Final Qualifier.

The Benedictine men’s indoor track and field team sent a few individuals to Carthage for the last chance event.
