Several asthmatics have reported breathing difficulties and visited Student Health Services in recent weeks. The cause? Residual irritants from smoking in doorways, vestibules and foyers. The Spring 2014 Koinonia Retreat will be held Friday-Sunday, April 11-13, at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien. Koinonia is the Greek word for “community,” which was an integral part of the faith life of the early Church. The Koinonia retreat weekend is an experience in Christian community based on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ – his life, death and resurrection – designed principally for college students (undergraduate or graduate). Students from Benedictine University (including the Springfield campus), College of DuPage and North Central College are invited to attend. The retreat is offered from a Catholic perspective. Past chair of the Democratic National Committee and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean will visit Benedictine University to discuss his experiences in politics, the future of the Democratic Party and his views on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 on the second floor of the Krasa Student Center. Catholic women invited to learn whether God is calling
Sacred Heart Monastery in Lisle is offering a monthly discernment program for single women who are practicing Catholics. The next program is Thursday, March 20. The program is designed to help women discover God’s call for them in this life. We believe that there is richness in religious life that needs further exposure. Single Catholic women are invited to join us and pray about this possibility, discover the privileges and responsibilities of this type of vocation, or just learn about this way of life. The program would also suit those who are making decisions about their career or serving as a missionary or volunteer. • With the improving weather, take your workouts and lunch breaks outdoors. Plan a hike with friends on the weekends or a walk in the sun during your lunch hour.
• Eat up those spring crops. Artichokes, asparagus, cherries and strawberries are all harvested in the spring and produce that is eaten while in-season is the most flavorful. Preserving spring fruits and vegetables by canning, jarring or freezing them can allow you to enjoy them all year long.
• Vitamin D is an important vitamin for bone health as we age, and luckily it has one very powerful source – the sun. As the days warm up and the sun comes out, try and spend some time outdoors to soak up that vitamin D.
