The new Fr. Michael E. Komechak, O.S.B., Art Gallery on the fifth floor of Kindlon Hall is now open to faculty, staff and students. Fr. Michael acquired nearly 4,000 art pieces from locally, regionally and internationally recognized artists, and established one of the finest private art and sculpture collections in the Midwest before he passed away in 2009. Fr. Michael’s dream was that one day the collection he gathered to engage and enrich the University and surrounding community would be exhibited in a permanent home to be viewed and appreciated on a grand scale. The new gallery is about 4,700 square feet and includes climate-controlled storage and restoration/work and office space. Regular hours of operation are 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Benedictine University has received a generous $46,000, F-SCRAP grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic opportunity to allow for the diversion of all food scraps generated in the cafeteria and other buildings. This new composting effort, in conjunction with Compost Supply of Newark, will allow Benedictine to divert in excess of 105,000 pounds (52.5 tons) per year of food waste from landfills and wastewater. Composting will also be another way in which Benedictine meets its commitments to the Illinois Sustainable University Initiative. Jobs for student workers managing the diversion program will provide a unique opportunity for students to learn about sustainability. Years for the Environment, which has grown organically out of the Benedictine hallmark value of stewardship, has increased the presence of sustainability in the curriculum, highlighted the importance of sustainability in the surrounding community, and encouraged The University to reduce its carbon footprint. The student-led community garden has provided modest contributions to the dining hall, and composting food scraps will allow students to see the other end of a natural food system. Compostables include: food scraps (even meat), paper napkins and compostable disposables. Recyclables include other paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. Everything else is garbage. St. Procopius Abbey's “The Documents of Vatican II Lecture Series” will present Fr. Robert Barron, renowned theologian and speaker and also rector/president of Mundelein Seminary, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24 at the abbey. Fr. The Benedictine University Library Faculty Authors Series will
present Christine M. Fletcher, Ph.D., associate professor of Theology
and Oblate of St. Procopius Abbey and her recently published book, “The
Artist and the Trinity. Dorothy L. Sayers’ Theology of Work” at 4:15
p.m. on Wednesday, September 25 in the library on the second floor of
Kindlon Hall. Fletcher will share and discuss her work and entertain
questions from the audience. Students, faculty and staff are welcome.

It’s not too soon to start thinking about Homecoming 2013 beginning
the week of October 7. University Development Events invites all
departments and offices on campus to participate in the Homecoming
Office Decorating Contest. A panel of judges will select the winning
office based on use of the Homecoming theme, “Rolling out the Red
Carpet,” BenU spirit, originality and the use of “green” materials. The
winning office receives a continental breakfast on Monday, October 14
and the travelling trophy to proudly display until Homecoming 2014. Stay
