MCP 610 - Social, Psychological and Cultural Aspects of Aging
This course examines the social, psychological, and cultural aspects that
impact the aging process. An analysis of the individual and society, explorations
of changes in roles and status, intergenerational relationships, socio-cultural
differences, and intra-psychic dynamics will be explored.
MCP 667
- Multifaceted Gerontological Assessment Geriatric Clinical Assessment,
or the art of listening with a clinical ear, is developed from a solid foundation
in counseling and clinical assessment skills. In this course, the aging components
will be added in areas of sensory awareness, function of daily living, cognitive
impairment, additions, spiritual concerns, and depression. These evaluative processes
will be further discussed in terms of their implications for interdisciplinary
intervention.
MCP 629 - Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy
Students receive training in client-centered therapy including audio and
videotape recordings of simulated counseling sessions with individual tape playback
consultations.
MCP 668 - Biology of Aging This course teaches
students to identify the basic aging processes that will occur in older adults
and discern normal aging processes as well as specific disease processes. Students
will also be exposed to the complex interplay between older adults, their health
and environment.
MPH/MGMT Elective - Management/ Administration
Students will choose from specific existing Management/Administrative courses
available from our graduate Business Department.
MCP 585 - Grief and
Loss This course examines the process a person experiences as the result
of either unanticipated or expected life losses. Cultural and cohort differences
in grieving styles are explored. A skill component is included to facilitate learning.
MCP 690/691 - Life Span Services Field Placement The practicum/internship
provides the opportunity to synthesize and apply the knowledge and skills acquired
through academic preparation. Faculty advisors assist students to integrate theory
and knowledge about aging and professional practice.
MCP 689 - Professional
Issues in Life Span Care This course presents an overview of gerontology
as a profession. Special attention is given to ethical issues. The course reviews
contemporary setting in the field of aging and analyzes the status of gerontology
in terms of occupation as a human service provider.
