Commencement vs Graduation
What do these terms mean?
Applying for graduation is a formal process where students notify their institution of their intention to complete their degree requirements by a certain date. This application is crucial because it triggers a review of the student’s academic record to ensure all coursework, exams, and other requirements have been successfully completed for the awarding of the degree.
Attending the commencement ceremony, on the other hand, is typically optional. Commencement is a ceremonial event that celebrates the achievements of graduates, but participation in the ceremony does not affect the status of a student’s degree completion. Once all academic and administrative requirements are met, the institution will confer the degree, whether or not the student chooses to participate in the commencement ceremony.
Therefore, while applying for graduation is a mandatory step in the process of earning a degree, attending the commencement ceremony is not a requirement for graduation but rather a celebratory event that graduates can choose to participate in.

Class Gift
Join your fellow seniors in shaping the experience of future Benedictine University students.
All seniors are encouraged to honor their graduation year by contributing to an area they care about.
When you give to a specific area, it’s a significant way to support the University and allow future students to benefit from opportunities like those you enjoyed.
Whether you give to athletics, your academic major, a student organization, the Mission Fund, or another area you’re interested in, you can support a cause you’re passionate about that has helped define your BenU experience.
If you are interested in serving on the Senior Class Gift committee, contact Dr. PJ Thompson at 630-829-6063 or via email.
