Life in the Pond: Science of Turtles

Join us for our 2nd annual turtle event in collaboration with BenU Harden Lab! This family-friendly workshop will feature numberous activities including: outdoor science stations with turtle trap checking, dip netting for macroinvertebrates, and radio telemetry demonstrations; live turtles visiting from Cosley Zoo; museum scavenger hunts; water quality demonstrations with an interactive groundwater model. Special presentations about the Blanding's Turtle Recovery Project from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County!

Recommended for ages 10+
This interactive workshop includes several true-life stories about survival and peril in the wilderness. Learn ways to prepare for inclement weather and safety tips for your next outdoor adventure. Recommendations for supplies to create a survival kit will be covered, including the proper use of the items, and participants will receive three free supplies to take home with them. Shelter building and fire starting demostrations will be held outdoors, weather permitting.
(Please note: Nature Education Programs, Ltd. will offer complete survial kits and limited other equipment for sale at the conclusion of the program.)

Join us for a day of climate science!
Keynote speaker Dr. Yarrow Axford will present on her research of arctic paleoclimatology.
In collaboration with the BenU Department of Biological Sciences, the museum is proud to host a special Darwin Day event focused on the study of climate change. Keynote speaker Dr. Yarrow Axford, Associate Professor at Northwestern University, will highlight her work in paleolimnology (the study of lake sediments and past lake environments) to better understand the processes and implications of climate change. NOVA WILD! Day
BSA Cub Scout Award Opportunity

Registration is required by October 31, 2019.
Cost is $10 per child. All children must be attended by an adult.
Join us and earn a Nova Award! Wolves, Bears, and Webelos Cub Scouts will complete ALL requirements for the Nova WILD! award. Scouts will work with Nova Counselors and JSNM staff as they explore the museum and participate in a variety of activities to learn about native wildlife. Go Eagles! Join us for a fun-filled day to celebrate BenU's Homecoming!
The museum will host its annual Open House from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Scavenger hunts, craft activities, nature touch tables, and more will be offered in the museum. The museum will also host a kids craft station at the Homecoming Tailgate from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Stop by to make a free craft, and stay for free lunch, music, and more at the BenU tailgate party.
