- Description:
- The wooly mammoth lived throughout North America from 1,000,000 to 10,000 years ago in the period known as the Pleistocene. Wooly mammoths were an average of 12 feet high at the shoulder and had huge curving tusks. Their fur was very thick, reddish-brown in color, and with a heavy undercoat. The accuracy of these observations has been made possible by the discovery of species preserved in their entirety in the frozen parts of Russia. Wooly mammoths closest modern relatives are the African and Indian elephants. Mammoths were a favorite subject for the cave paintings of prehistoric people.
