Workshop focuses on mentoring,  career advancement for women

Lisle, Illinois – Want to learn how to be a more effective leader? Looking for a professional mentor who can show you the ropes and give you the tools you need to succeed?

The Women’s Institute for Global Leadership at Benedictine University is holding a series of professional development workshops to help women enhance their management skills, set career goals, and meet and mingle with other business leaders.

The initial workshop, “Mentoring and Networking for Leaders,” from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, will be facilitated by Janice Fenn, founder and president of the Professional Resources Organization Inc., a consulting firm specializing in employee development, leadership and diversity training seminars. The workshop will be held at the Margaret and Harold Moser Center in Naperville. The cost is $50.

Attendees will develop their own blueprint for how they can better identify potential careers and advancement opportunities, and seize the kinds of mentoring and networking opportunities that will lead to career growth and personal fulfillment, said Tanesha Pittman, executive director of the Women’s Institute.

“Learning how to mentor and network with employers and other professionals is critically important in the development and exploration of a career path,” Pittman said. “The event is designed to provide a broad base of skills necessary to coach, mentor, counsel, network and measure performance to assist others in becoming more committed to meeting personal performance objectives and increasing productivity.”

Mentoring and networking skills are covered more extensively in Benedictine’s new Master of Science (M.S.) in Leadership program, but the June session will include snippets and other key points adapted from course curricula, such as:

  • What is mentoring and networking?
  • Benefits and different types of mentoring.
  • When and how to use mentoring and networking.
  • Mentoring and networking strategies.
  • Barriers to mentoring and networking strategies.
  • Choosing a mentor.
  • Mentee or protégé characteristics.
  • Understanding change in the mentoring and networking process.

Fenn, co-author of the book, “Do You See What I See? A Diversity Tale for Retaining People of Color” and creator of the Development Ladder Game™, has led similar training seminars with clients such as American Express, the American Cancer Society, ConAgra Foods, DuPont, Gulfstream, Johnson Controls, McDonald’s Corporation, Microsoft and Northwestern Mutual.
