Mesa, Ariz. ~ New full-time traditional undergraduate students enrolled beginning fall 2016 at the Benedictine University at Mesa campus may be eligible for the new Mesa Partnership Scholarship to help with tuition costs.
The $3,000 annual scholarship is for employees or dependents of City of Mesa employees; employees or dependents of Mesa Public Schools employees; Mesa Public Schools graduates and Mesa Community College students who have earned 60 credit hours or more or an associate degree.
Mesa Mayor John Giles touted the new scholarship in his state of the city address and Michael Cowan, superintendent of Mesa Public Schools, also has expressed support of the partnership with Benedictine.
“Benedictine University is an important part of the Mesa community and has grown steadily since arriving downtown in 2012,” Giles said. “These scholarships show BenU’s commitment to helping our local students succeed. Thank you for your generosity.”
Cowan echoed these sentiments.
“The Mesa Partnership Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for district graduates and employees to pursue a postsecondary degree,” Cowan said. “Mesa values education and I am grateful Benedictine recognizes that investing in our graduates and employees will strengthen our community. I look forward to identifying other opportunities to partner with the university.”
The partnership is a result of a joint effort to provide higher education opportunities to the greater East Valley.
“We were contemplating what more we can do for city workers, students and employees and this all came about as a topic for consideration that has now become more than an idea, but something that can actually be made possible,” said Charlie Gregory, campus executive officer of Benedictine University at Mesa.
The scholarship is renewable if students maintain good academic standing. It can be combined with the Benedictine Heritage and St. Benedict Award scholarships, but cannot be awarded in conjunction with Benedictine’s Catholic High School or Parish Service scholarships.
