John Henry Newman expert celebrates the life and thought of the Church’s newest saint

Ken ParkerInternationally acclaimed Catholic theologian Kenneth L. Parker is the guest speaker at Benedictine University’s event celebrating the canonization of the 19th-century English writer and church leader John Henry Newman.

Professor Parker will speak on “Why John Henry Newman is a Saint for Our Time” Monday, September 23, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kindlon Hall of Learning 5th floor reception area.

Parker holds the Ryan Chair for Newman Studies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He completed his doctorate under historian Eamon Duffy at Cambridge and began his research on John Henry Newman during his post-doctoral studies at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Prior to his tenure at Duquesne, Parker taught historical theology at Saint Louis University and served as interim executive director of the National Institute for Newman Studies.

“John Henry Newman is one of the great figures in modern Catholic higher education,” says Dr. Peter Huff, Chief Mission Officer and professor of theology at Benedictine University. “Professor Parker’s fresh insights into Newman’s relevance for our day will inspire anyone seeking personal meaning in the dialogue between faith and reason.”

Parker is the author or editor of seven books. His most recent publication, Your Grown-up Faith, applies principles from the spirituality of John Henry Newman to the challenge of the life of faith in contemporary society.
