Grant will allow Benedictine University to upgrade lights, reduce energy usage

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation has awarded a $40,500 grant to Benedictine University for energy efficient upgrades to indoor lighting systems in three University buildings.

The project consists of assessing approximately 1,800 existing fluorescent lighting fixtures throughout the Krasa Center and Lownik and Scholl Halls and determining a more energy efficient ballast/lamp combination for each fixture.

The project includes removing the old lamps and ballasts from the existing fluorescent lighting fixtures and replacing them with more efficient ones. The project is expected to yield a 67.5 kilowatt reduction in energy usage which would produce an annual energy cost savings of almost $17,000.

By replacing the existing flourescent lighting fixtures with more efficient bulbs, the project would also reduce energy consumption by nearly half and cut down on the emission of greenhouse gases. One estimate equates the project with planting 45 acres of trees or taking approximately 30 cars off the road.

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation invests in clean energy development and land preservation efforts, working with organizations to improve environmental quality in Illinois. The Foundation supports programs and projects that will improve energy efficiency, develop renewable energy resources and preserve and enhance natural areas and wildlife habitats.
