Assignment: Write a short nutrition article

Write a short nutrition article suitable for publication in a national magazine. The topic is up to you. You may elect to keep the same topic you already have been researching for your professional manuscript, however, remember that the style of writing is quite different. (Later, you will write a query letter to pitch this article to an editor.)

It is expected that your typed (about 2-5 pages double-spaced) article will adhere to the guidelines presented in the related on-line handout. After your article, clearly (1) state your publication type (e.g., fitness, teen, women's, men's health), (2) article word count, and (3) describe the results of your completed grade level analysis of your article.

If you elect to use a more journalistic style, in which you interview food or culinary professionals in DuPage County, you have a chance to get published in the annual university DuPage Arts magazine. You might elect to choose another topic different from your manuscript topic in order to accomplish this. For example, interview the owners/bakers/chefs of a local DuPage food establishment about how they are blending nutrition knowledge with culinary skills to create healthy but yummy menu items... combine this with comments from a dietitian... or think of that idea from the perspective of good nutrition for children... etc., etc. To be eligible for publication in this magazine (not guaranteed, depends on space availability and article quality), your article must tie in the art of nutrition/cooking with DuPage county. Note: those of you electing to write in this fashion should also submit a copy of your article to Catherine Stein Arnold, who is on the magazine's committee.

Grading Criteria for the article: (38 possible points)

For grading, submit your article directly as an e-mail attachment to instructor Christine Palumbo at palumbord@aol.com, or FAX it to 630-369-COOK.
