M.P.H. Community Nutrition Concentration:
Program Description
The Community Nutrition Concentration of the Master of Public Health program is designed for persons whose career aspirations may include nutrition and health education, assessment, planning, program delivery, counseling, outcome evaluation, and program administration. The nutrition courses integrate and apply concepts for individual and group situations across the life cycle. Persons earning this concentration may be employed in community and care settings, among others.
Option 1 is targeted for those seeking a deeper understanding of the science of nutrition, but not seeking registration status as a dietitian. It is designed to complement and expand the knowledge and experience base of health care professionals, such as physicians, nurses, and current registered dietitians. Option 2 is designed for persons who wish to become registered dietitians. Applicants must already have earned a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Verification Statement from a program accredited by CADE prior to program start and be separately admitted to the Benedictine University Dietetic Internship in order to pursue this concentration option. The dietetic internship program accepts 12 dietetic interns annually, and participates in the April match period. Benedictine University students and alumni quality to apply for an approved pre-match option; six of the 12 annual slots may be filled during the December pre-match period.
The Benedictine University Dietetic Internship is granted accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 South Riverside Place, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995. This Dietetic
Internship program has a community emphasis, exposing the intern to a vast scope of available career options.
Internship sites include both traditional and non-traditional settings, most of which are located in or near the
Western suburbs of Chicago.
The dietetic internship provides over 1,000 practice hours of supervised field placement in community, health care, and management organizations.
