Consultant RD as a Career Choice
The consultant dietitian practices independently, having his or her own business. He or she may offer primarily one type of service, such as counseling, or a wide variety of services. For example, a consultant dietitian may:
- Advise the food and pharmaceutical companies
- Speak at professional seminars
- Author food and nutrition books
- Counsel patients in nursing homes, medical offices, and/or dental centers
- Design food and nutrition production and delivery systems
- Serve as a nutrition and fitness expert for athletes
The Business Nutrition Professional works with directly with corporations, often in a consulting capacity. The responsibilities can be quite varied, depending upon the organizational needs, but some examples include serving as a:
- Professional resource consulting to industry or corporations about food product design and development, food styling, menu design, and/or product/menu nutrient analysis
- Sales representative, broker, or purchasing agent for food, equipment, or nutritional products
- Food and nutrition marketing expert in public relations and media (e.g., newspapers, magazines, radio, television)
- Nutrition inservice/education training coordinator
Although neither advanced degree nor becoming a registered dietitian is required to enter a career in the food industry or as a sales representative,
earning the credentials of registered dietitian can greatly enhance your career opportunities in many food and nutrition organizations.
