Dietetic Internship:
Program Description

Some predicted trends, as indicated in the July/August 2004 issue of ADA Times, include: increased demand for dietetics professionals in nursing homes, residential care facilities and clinics, the food and nutrition industry, business communication and journalism, sports nutrition, government, corporate wellness programs, and other non-traditional work settings. In addition to a strong background in dietetics, employers are looking for skill sets in enhanced communication, negotiation and supervisory abilities, critical thinking, problem solving, and customer focus skills. The ADA Future Practice and Education Task Force (2007) projects a strong role for dietitians in wellness and public health. If we prepare to meet our future, practice roles could include wellness specialist, sports nutrition specialist, obesity management specialist, corporate and community nutritionists, among other areas.

Are you ready to meet the future?

The Benedictine University Dietetic Internship program is designed as a future-orientated, comprehensive, dynamic program, that is interdependent with the surrounding community. Leadership skills are fostered, cooperative learning from peers and mentors is encouraged, and self-responsibility is stressed. Benedictine University strives to develop an academic community that supports each person in the pursuit of knowledge, personal development, and a life lived in balance. Our hope is to stir within each intern, the hopes, dreams, and passions to become the best they are able... to make a positive difference in the lives of others... to continue to learn and develop for the rest of their lives. This program, as part of Benedictine University, prepares its students for a lifetime, as active, informed, and responsible citizens and leaders of the dietetics and world communities.

The Benedictine University combined master degree/dietetic internship Open House is on Thursday, January 3, 2008, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be held in the Nutrition Lab, Birck Hall of Science, room 230. Come see the campus and meet the faculty and program directors. Contact Julie Moreschi, the Benedictine University Dietetic Internship Director for more information on the program.

This Dietetic Internship is currently granted accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995, 312/899-0400. The program is a combined master degree dietetic internship. Thus students work towards both the Dietetic Internship Verification Statement and a degree in either Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness (M.S.N.W.) or Master of Public Health (M.P.H). Although you will gain a solid practice experience base in medical nutrition therapy and management, through unique site rotations our program is designed to provide a strong community education emphasis, with a lifespan focus. This program is designed for those persons whose career aspirations may include nutrition and health education assessment, planning, program delivery, counseling, outcome evaluation, and program administration in community, school, outpatient, corporate wellness, and private practice settings. We look forward to our journey together!
