Frequently Asked Questions

Are there advantages to immediately starting my college career at Benedictine University as a freshman?

There are numerous advantages! These include, but are not limited to:

  • Quality academic outcomes! The Benedictine University nutrition programs have been rated highly by our own students and alumni. Our RD pass rates average about 10% above the national average. Our program is attractive to others, evidenced by our recent enrollment increases that were double that of that national average for dietetics programs.
  • You will learn from award winning instructors who have researched, presented, and published in nutrition. We carefully select adjunct faculty for their field experience, so you can learn from a variety of instructors.
  • We strongly believe in "hands-on" learning and assessment. Nutrition courses use multiple methods of interaction and assessment, including authentic case studies, presentations, lesson plans, research, laboratory reports, debates, discussions, and portfolio development.
  • You will gain a fuller benefit of the Core and better understanding of the Benedictine heritage and values.
  • The nutrition program is affiliated with graduate programs enabling completion of graduate coursework as electives during your undergraduate years. This lightens the academic load should you decide to pursue a masters degree ("double counts!"). Few transfer students enter with electives.
  • You can apply for the nutrition and dietetic scholarships once affiliated with a dietetics program.
  • Learning is progressive over the four years, versus crunching all the science and nutrition courses into just two years.
  • The longer length of stay provides a greater opportunity for involvement and development of your leadership potential in nutrition and dietetics.
  • You will have the advantage of time to learn from and network with nutrition professionals.

Does your university accept transfer credit?

Yes, we accept course credit from other colleges and universities with accreditation. Credits are examined on a case-by-case basis. All courses successfully completed with IAI (Illinois Articulation Initiative) designations are transferable. Only courses with grades of a "C" or better, within a specified timeframe, can count towards meeting the DPD requirements. Refer to our Course Validation and Verification Policy (click here).

Application procedures, transfer FAQ, transfer guides, and other pertinent information can be found online at: http://www.ben.edu/admissions/transfer/.

I am a transfer (or second degree) student. Can I send just come in and show you my transcript for an evaluation?

We want to make certain that you have the most accurate and complete articulation possible, so we require that you submit your complete application, including official transcripts, directly to the Enrollment Center so a representative of the center can begin the articulation process. They are the "articulation experts." Only through an official articulation can we tell you the answers to the questions: "How many courses do I have left?" and "How long will it take me to complete the program?

While your articulation is in progress, you may receive a request for further information, such as a more complete course description or syllabus of a DPD cognate (e.g., science course). If you completed any nutrition courses within the accepted Course Validation and Verification policy guidelines, you will need to provide syllabi and course projects to the DPD Director after the rest of the articulation process is completed by the Enrollment Center representative. This Transfer Counselor will assist you throughout the transfer process and your first term of registration. Your advising file is then sent to the Nutrition Department.

If you only want a quick "estimate" via an informal evaluation, you are encouraged to utilize the checklists and course descriptions available online for our program (click on the Program Information links to the left). Transcript evaluations do not occur at our department or college level for the nutrition programs. We do not accept requests for reviews.

I am an international student. Can I just show you my transcript for an evaluation?

The general articulation process for an international student is similar to that of a transfer student. Please read the response to the previous question.

In addition to submitting official transcripts, the international student must also submit official translations, and the ECE evaluation. ECE applications are available on the internet at the ECE website or in the International Center. The application is at: http://www.ben.edu/admissions/international/index.asp.

The required documents for International Admissions are posted online at: http://www.ben.edu/internationalcenter/required_documents.asp. Submit these documents directly to the Enrollment Center.

While your articulation is in progress, expect to receive a request for further information if any of your coursework includes the DPD cognates or nutrition courses. However, Note that the Course Validation and Verification policy guidelines apply. Normally international students are asked to provide a copy of the entire course syllabus per degree (original, and translated to English if needed), a copy of your original transcripts, and course assignments and projects you believe related to the Benedictine University DPD nutrition portfolio to the DPD Director. The DPD Director cannot fully articulate (i.e., give you the most credit possible) the international courses against the DPD Knowledge and Skills without all the requested pieces. This may take one or two hours once all the items are present, since there are 100 DPD Knowledge and Skill statements. The articulation of the nutrition and food courses occurs after the rest of the articulation process is completed by the Enrollment Center representative and you are accepted as a student into the University. A Transfer Counselor will assist you throughout the transfer process and your first term of registration. Your advising file is then sent to the Nutrition Department.
