Nutrition Department
M.S. Nutrition and Wellness:
Program Description
In our dynamic health care environment, it is essential for all health practitioners to develop skills for fostering and measuring improved health outcomes and financial accountability. This program provides a strong foundation in nutrition and health risk assessment, motivation, intervention, and evaluation. The research component is applied, in which a student examines the outcomes of a health education assessment or intervention, possibly within his or her own work setting, or conducts empirical research.
This degree serves as a portal to careers in health promotion and risk reduction, community-based education programming and therapeutic intervention.
The Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness (M.S.N.W.) is designed to enable students to:
|
Integrate current concepts of nutrition and health to the assessment, motivation, intervention, and evaluation of individuals and groups across the life cycle.
|
|
Integrate current alternative and complementary therapies into health promotion protocols.
|
|
Apply critical thinking skills.
|
|
Conduct needs assessments of individuals and groups for preventive and therapeutic interventions.
|
|
Conduct outcomes research, either as community-based research or wellness program evaluation.
|
This master degree program is unique in that in addition to providing a life science-based foundational core,
it provides the
opportunity for students to select a concentration in nutrition (Sports Nutrition or Dietetic Internship) or from the
complementary fields of Health Education or Exercise Physiology. With appropriate course selection, students
would be eligible to sit for the certification exam by the American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM) as a Health/Fitness Instructor or Exercise Specialist, or by National Commission for Health Education
Credentialing (NCHEC) as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
The sports nutrition concentration was developed using the content outline for Board Certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics.
Through May 31, 2009, completion of a Master of Science degree in nutrition with a sports nutrition emphasis
can contributes to meeting 1,200 of the
1,500 specialty practice hours required to sit for the national Sports Nutrition Specialty Certification exam administered by the commission on
Dietetics Registration (CDR). More information about this new (March 2006) Certification by
CDR is posted at:
http://www.cdrnet.org/whatsnew/Sports.htm.
This is the only Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness in the country that is combined with a Dietetic
Internship program. This Dietetic Internship Concentration provides the practice-based knowledge and
experience for practice as a registered dietitian. This Dietetic Internship program
is accredited by the
Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association. This Dietetic
Internship program has a community emphasis, exposing the intern to a vast scope of available career options.
Internship sites include both traditional and non-traditional settings, most of which are located in or near the
Western suburbs of Chicago. The Dietetic Internship provides supervised field placement in community, health care and management organizations.
In addition to professional preparation, the program also provides an excellent educational background for those who wish to pursue further study at the
doctorate level.
