Visual Studio .NET is the comprehensive tool set for rapidly building and integrating XML Web services, Windows-based applications, and Web solutions. This development studio features a source-editor, resource editor, documentation, compiler, and debugger in a single integrated environment, which greatly streamlines the software development process.

The package consists of Visual C++ .NET, Visual C# .NET, and Visual Basic .NET. The Visual C++ compilet features many improvements and also supports Managed Extensions, which allow developers to create C++ applications that take advantage of .NET. Visual C# .NET and Visual Basic .NET are the two languages that ship with the .NET Framework and are supported by Visual Studio .NET.

Microsoft Visual J#™ .NET helps developers migrate existing Java applications to the .NET platform and is currently in development at the time of writing.

System Requirements

  • PC with a Pentium II 450 MHz or higher processor
  • Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later
  • 64 MB of RAM for Windows NT Workstation; 160 MB for Windows NT Server; 96 MB for Windows 2000 Professional; 160 MB for Windows XP Professional
  • 3.5 GB of available hard-disk space on installation drive; 500 MB on system drive

Readme.htm on Disk 1 contains notes for installing Visual Studio .NET.

Software Installation

IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend closing all open applications and windows and disabling background applications before installing any of the software.

  1. Insert the Visual Studio .NET Disk 1 into the CD-ROM drive. The Setup program should start automatically. If it does not, double-click SETUP.EXE in the CD-ROM directory.
  2. Run the Windows Component Update to install the .NET Framework. Windows Component Update is found on Disk 5 of your set.
  3. Start the Visual Studio .Net installer. When asked to select features to install, you may want to uncheck "Documentation" because you can install the latest MSDN Library afterward.
  4. Follow the instructions given by the Setup Wizard.
