Center for Civic Leadership and Public Service
Shaping a new generation of public leaders and responsible citizens

Civic Education Program

Effective democratic self-government rests on the character, judgment and involvement of citizens committed to the ideals of American constitutional democracy. The Center, assisted by an interdisciplinary faculty, offers targeted courses, programs and service learning opportunities to undergraduates that will aid them in becoming competent citizens.

Visiting Scholars Program
Scholars in the fields of law, politics and government will spend two or three days on campus giving lectures to a wide variety of classes. The visiting scholar will also host a public presentation on his or her area of expertise for students, faculty and area residents.

The Democratic Citizenship Class
This three-hour credit course is open to all undergraduates interested in learning more about their constitutional rights and liberties and their responsibilities as good citizens. The course includes teaching students how they can impact public policy through active engagement and service learning.

Internships
The Center provides students with internships in the fields of law, politics and government. Students interns have worked at the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office, the Citizens Advocacy Center in Elmhurst, Family Shelter in Wheaton, the People’s Resource Center in Wheaton and the offices of State Senator Kirk Dillard.

"The only title in our democracy superior to that of President is the title of citizen."

— U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis (1856-1941), a fierce advocate of individual rights and the freedom of speech.
