“Hotel Rwanda: A Lesson Yet to Be Learned”
Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
at the Rice Center
Ten years ago, as the country of Rwanda descended into a conflict that killed one million people, a hotel manager named Paul Rusesabagina sheltered over a thousand refugees from certain death. The movie Hotel Rwanda, nominated for three Academy Awards, told the inspiring story of this real-life hero, portrayed by actor Don Cheadle.
Rusesabagina founded the Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation (HRRF) which provides support, care, and assistance to children orphaned by, and women abused during, the genocide in Rwanda. His autobiography, An Ordinary Man, delves into Rusesabagina’s personal journey while explaining the history behind Rwanda’s Hutu and Tutsis tribes within the historical context of the conflict.
