Benedictine Rule of Leadership

Benedictine Rule of Leadership : Classic Management Secrets You Can Use Today

Fifteen centuries ago, a monk named Benedict founded a monastic system that continues to thrive. In his work, The Rule, he presented many lessons in leadership, innovation, organization and ethics. It also offered the first complete management system of the Western world. In The Benedictine Rule of Leadership, business professors Craig and Oliver Galbraith offer Benedict's principles in a new way that can help today's managers and organizations succeed in the 21st century

Catholic Social Justice

This refreshing collection of essays, published in association with Caritas-social action (the Catholic Church's agency for social justice) draws together a distinguished panel of academics and practitioners involved in the area of social justice. Combining theory and practice, the diverse and thought-provoking contributions explore issues facing the church and its role in contemporary society and the relationship between theology, social justice and social spirituality. Catholic Universities in Church Society: A Dialogue on Ex Corde Ecclesiae

In this volume, distinguished scholars and legal experts define the key questions and explore the future implications of Ex corde for American Catholic colleges and universities. The contributors probe the schools' relationships with the Church hierarchy, exploring in particular the role of the bishops, the degree of autonomy from ecclesiastical control, and questions of academic freedom. They also consider specific legal issues that American Catholic colleges must face, including recognition of student groups, tenure and promotion decisions, governance, student and faculty conduct, and the relationship between canon and civil law, including compliance with national and local civil rights provisions.

Enhancing Religious Identity: Best Practices from Catholic Campuses

Catholic colleges and universities have achieved a prestigious place in American higher education, but at the risk of losing their religious identity. This book confronts challenges facing all members of the college community, from presidents and trustees through the faculty and deans to student-life professionals, in making a renewed commitment to that mission. Developing the vision of Catholic higher education expressed in the Vatican statement Ex Corde Ecclesiae, these essays provide a framework for enhancing Catholic identity across the campus and in the curriculum. The contributors address significant aspects of the culture of Catholic higher education in order to prescribe the best practices that can help colleges and universities maintain their distinctive religious character and ethical vision.

Ex corde ecclesiae : documents concerning reception and implementation

During the decade from 1991 to 2001, the Implementation Committee of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops worked to apply Ex Corde Ecclesiae to the educational circumstances of the United States. The committee of bishops was assisted by the participation of eight presidents of Catholic colleges or universities and several other resource persons. In addition, theologians, canon lawyers, leaders of religious communities, and leaders of Catholic learned societies were asked to respond, year after year, on the issues and on various drafts of the "Application." Alice Gallin, O.S.U., a leader in American Catholic higher education, served as a resource person on the committee and attended nearly all of its meetings. In this book she presents a documentary history of the committee.

Five great Catholic ideas

Five great Catholic ideas

At first glance, this may appear to be a mere summary of trendy Catholic theology. The author, president and rector of St. John's Seminary College, Camarillo, Calif., discusses these five ideas: We are saved in community; the kingdom of heaven begins on earth; God respects our human freedom; scriptural interpretation is a work of the whole church; great ideas develop over time. On second glance, however, the reader sees, for example, that the author means by "community" something much deeper than liturgical chumminess, and by "human freedom" he means far more than "do whatever you feel like doing." It is in the church that one finds salvation, he says, and in order to make fully human decisions we need clarity of understanding and freedom of will. Five Great Catholic Ideas takes the Catholic basics and unpacks them in a way that will inform and inspire. To read this book is to discover that there is a depth and complexity to these ideas that should short-circuit facile distinctions between "liberal" and "conservative" interpretations.

Lazarus at the Table: Catholics and Social Justice book cover

Lazarus at the Table: Catholics and Social Justice

Lazarus at the Table is the fruit of more than two decades of instructing students in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. For most of these years Bernard Evans has taught graduate students. Lately he also teaches lay Catholics engaged in parish ministry and enrolled in diocesan ministry formation programs. This book is written specifically for the latter group. Evans agrees with the bishops of the United States who insist that any Catholic education that does not include Catholic social teaching is not fully Catholic. He writes clearly, concisely, and convincingly about how Catholic social teaching addresses such contemporary issues as human dignity, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, the death penalty, war, family, marriage, poverty, superfluous income, just wages, unions, peace, solidarity, and many more. Excerpts from the church’s official teachings in papal documents abound throughout the book.

Passing on the Faith: Transforming Traditions for the Next Generation of Jews, Christians, and Muslims

Passing on the Faith: Transforming Traditions for the Next Generation of Jews, Christians, and Muslims

From the beginning, the Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—have stressed the importance of transmitting religious identity from one generation to the next. Today, that sustaining mission has never been more challenged. Will young people have a faith to guide them? How can faith traditions anchor religious attachments in this secular, skeptical culture? The fruit of a historic gathering of scholars and religious leaders across three faiths and many disciplines, this important book reports on the religious lives of young people in today’s world. It’s also a unique inventory of creative and thoughtful responses from churches, synagogues, and mosques working to keep religion a significant force in those lives.

Saint Benedict on the freeway : a rule of life for the 21st century

Saint Benedict on the freeway : a rule of life for the 21st century

How can we heal the rift between our daily lives and the sacred? How can we live a life capable of hearing "the still small voice" of God while experiencing the speed and sensory overload of modern life? This book is Ware's answer to these questions. She acknowledges that others have addressed the questions; on the one hand there are books which have significant depth but speak in academic or "in-group" language and provide little help adapting these insights to everyday life. On the other hand, there are practical "how-to" exercises which assist in very particular spiritual experiences but which do not offer integrated, sustainable, life-changing patterns. St. Benedict on the Freeway fills this gap. It "translates into twenty-first century life spiritually formative practices worked out in the past, creatively adapting those disciplines to contemporary daily life."

Science and Religion in Search of Cosmic Purpose

Science and Religion in Search of Cosmic Purpose

Many scientists today think of the universe as essentially purposeless. Likewise, modern and postmodern philosophers have often been suspicious of any religious claims that the natural world embodies and eternal meaning or teleology. Not all scientific thinkers subscribe to this cosmic pessimism, however, and some would even argue that contemporary knowledge is consistent with a religious sense of cosmic purpose. This stimulating book offers candid reflections on the question of cosmic purpose written both by prominent scientists and by scholars representing the world's religious traditions. Examining the issue from a wide variety of perspectives, this is the only current book to deal with cosmic purpose from an interreligious and interdisciplinary perspective. These essays will challenge readers to ponder their own place in the cosmos as they seek to interpret the visions of the world's great spiritual traditions in the light of natural science.
