Catholic Universities in Church Society: A Dialogue on Ex Corde Ecclesiae In this volume, distinguished scholars and legal experts define the key questions and explore the future implications of Ex corde for American Catholic colleges and universities. The contributors probe the schools' relationships with the Church hierarchy, exploring in particular the role of the bishops, the degree of autonomy from ecclesiastical control, and questions of academic freedom. They also consider specific legal issues that American Catholic colleges must face, including recognition of student groups, tenure and promotion decisions, governance, student and faculty conduct, and the relationship between canon and civil law, including compliance with national and local civil rights provisions. |

Ex corde ecclesiae : documents concerning reception and implementation During the decade from 1991 to
2001, the Implementation Committee of the National Conference of Catholic
Bishops worked to apply Ex Corde Ecclesiae to the educational
circumstances of the United States. The committee of bishops was assisted
by the participation of eight presidents of Catholic colleges or universities
and several other resource persons. In addition, theologians, canon
lawyers, leaders of religious communities, and leaders of Catholic learned
societies were asked to respond, year after year, on the issues and
on various drafts of the "Application." Alice Gallin, O.S.U.,
a leader in American Catholic higher education, served as a resource
person on the committee and attended nearly all of its meetings. In
this book she presents a documentary history of the committee. |

Five great Catholic ideas At first glance, this may appear to be a mere summary of trendy Catholic theology. The author, president and rector of St. John's Seminary College, Camarillo, Calif., discusses these five ideas: We are saved in community; the kingdom of heaven begins on earth; God respects our human freedom; scriptural interpretation is a work of the whole church; great ideas develop over time. On second glance, however, the reader sees, for example, that the author means by "community" something much deeper than liturgical chumminess, and by "human freedom" he means far more than "do whatever you feel like doing." It is in the church that one finds salvation, he says, and in order to make fully human decisions we need clarity of understanding and freedom of will. Five Great Catholic Ideas takes the Catholic basics and unpacks them in a way that will inform and inspire. To read this book is to discover that there is a depth and complexity to these ideas that should short-circuit facile distinctions between "liberal" and "conservative" interpretations. |

Lazarus at the Table: Catholics and Social Justice Lazarus at the Table is the fruit of more than two decades of instructing students in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. For most of these years Bernard Evans has taught graduate students. Lately he also teaches lay Catholics engaged in parish ministry and enrolled in diocesan ministry formation programs. This book is written specifically for the latter group. Evans agrees with the bishops of the United States who insist that any Catholic education that does not include Catholic social teaching is not fully Catholic. He writes clearly, concisely, and convincingly about how Catholic social teaching addresses such contemporary issues as human dignity, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, the death penalty, war, family, marriage, poverty, superfluous income, just wages, unions, peace, solidarity, and many more. Excerpts from the churchs official teachings in papal documents abound throughout the book. |

The fruit of a historic gathering of scholars and religious leaders across three faiths and many disciplines, this important book reports on the religious lives of young people in todays world. Its also a unique inventory of creative and thoughtful responses from churches, synagogues, and mosques working to keep religion a significant force in those lives. |

Science and Religion in Search of Cosmic Purpose Many scientists today think of the universe as essentially purposeless. Likewise, modern and postmodern philosophers have often been suspicious of any religious claims that the natural world embodies and eternal meaning or teleology. Not all scientific thinkers subscribe to this cosmic pessimism, however, and some would even argue that contemporary knowledge is consistent with a religious sense of cosmic purpose. This stimulating book offers candid reflections on the question of cosmic purpose written both by prominent scientists and by scholars representing the world's religious traditions. Examining the issue from a wide variety of perspectives, this is the only current book to deal with cosmic purpose from an interreligious and interdisciplinary perspective. These essays will challenge readers to ponder their own place in the cosmos as they seek to interpret the visions of the world's great spiritual traditions in the light of natural science. |
