Course Descriptions

Course 1: Executive Management and the Process of Coaching

Description: This course will describe the critical components that make up the executive job. Students will understand the requirements of the executive role to help them work with executives. In doing so, it will identify the criteria for successful coaching with executive leadership. Students will be presented with the concepts to help appreciate and assess the nature and flow of helping relationships. Within this context, the students will learn to confront themselves and their own development as a prelude for managing the coaching process.

Course 2: Behavior and Leadership

Description: This course will focus on the individual processes in organizations. Students will examine and understand behavioral orientations and individual styles. It will also explore interpersonal functioning and interactions-- attributions, problem-solving, stress, motivation, negotiation, and communication. At the end of the class, students will have a descriptive model of behavior.

Course 3: Coaching Skills I

Description: This course will emphasize the "gathering of information" while building the relationship. Students will be familiarized with interviewing, profiles, and 360-degree assessments. The result of this course will be for students to understand the person/situation 'matrix'-the "who' and the 'where' pieces or the intervention puzzle-and how to develop effective helping relationships. There will be a strong experiential component.

Course 4: Coaching Skills II

Description: This course will focus on the goal achievement process of the interventions. Students will learn goal setting, action planning, and results measurement. Issues of feedback and motivation will also be addressed. Students will learn and develop exercises and experiences that can be used directly with clients. The result of the course will be for students to comprehend implementation and impact-the 'what 'and 'how' of the intervention puzzle. There will be a strong experiential component.

Course 5: Coaching Teams and Groups

Description: This course will be a focus on group development, structure, dynamics, and leadership. Students will be able to provide process consulting for team building, conflict resolution, and inter-group competition. Advisory services for managers on change management will also be developed.

Course 6: Building a Practice

Description: This course will be designed to help students confront and manage the challenges of starting and developing their career. Students will consider strategy and marketing as it relates to their coaching business. Products and services, niches, partnerships, networking, message, and pricing will be considered. Students will create and present a Marketing Plan.

PRACTICUM
To be arranged. Students will complete 60 hours of face to face coaching and 10 hours of supervision. Supervision will be group events and occur in both face and phone meetings. As preparation to the work, students will need to orient themselves to the protocol and profiles. They will undergo a behavioral simulation prior to starting their work. Clients for the practicum will be provided through Benedictine outreach. Before starting practicum, there will be a comprehensive summary exam that will be practice-driven and situation-focused.
