Department of Language and Literature
Language programs at Benedictine
The Department of Language and Literature currently offers a major and a strong minor in Spanish, along with periodic courses in Arabic, French, and Mandarin Chinese.
Our approach to language instruction is guided by the belief that the world will have fewer boundaries for those who possess knowledge of another language and sensitivity toward other cultures. The development of this knowledge and sensitivity will stimulate students self growth and broaden their perspective, thus enabling them to become responsible citizens and leaders in the world community.
The faculty subscribes to the proficiency guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and uses them as a basis for instruction. Our courses are designed to enable students to achieve the following goals:
›› initiate and progressively develop communicative skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture;
›› help students to recognize the close relationship between language and culture, enabling them to become culturally sensitive to non-English speaking peoples and societies; and
›› broaden career opportunities in an increasingly interdependent world.
If you’re interested in learning more about our language course offerings or if you’re considering becoming a Spanish major or minor, we encourage you to explore our website or download our information sheet for prospective Spanish majors. You’re also welcome to contact the Department with any questions you may have.
